The biggest news coming out of this edition is Bellator's signing of former UFC and Strikeforce title challenger Paul Daley. Daley recently requested his release from Strikeforce claiming the decision was based on infrequency of fights with the promotion. It's a solid claim considering Strikeforce's glacial pace in booking cards, or maybe we're now conditioned by the UFC to expect a card every other weekend. Strikeforce might take the position that he had lost his last three with them and they didn't want to pay Daley a large sum to derail one of their prospects in his last contracted bout with the organization. Bellator comes out the only winner in all of this as Daley is relatively young, is still an exciting fighter, wants to fight frequently, and they get another "UFC vet" to solidify their roster.
The UFC announced the first crop of international talent to emerge from The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil show, which will enter the ranks at UFC 147 this weekend. While this is the best direction the show has taken recently (in my opinion of course), the UFC probably should have introduced them on a free card. Introducing new faces, let alone foreign ones, on a PPV ticket is a stretch at best even with names like Wandy, Franklin, and Werdum carrying it. In any case, there are some excellent fighters in the supporting cast like Rodrigo Damm, Francisco Drinaldo, Delson Heleno, as well as the younger true prospects of the show. I'm really anticipating future editions of international TUF, it's a fresh twist to an old format that will introduce both new and veteran faces to UFC fans.
Cavalcante's failed drug test was a complete bummer. While he plans to contest the result (and I urge everyone to stand behind the premise of innocent until proven guilty), this absolutely flays the dead horse that is Strikeforce and Showtime. Zuffa isn't smiling either because they could have really used these guys right about now with the rash of injuries hitting the UFC roster lately. Feijao may have blown an opportunity to not only regain the Strikeforce title but it also casts a shadow on future negotiations with the UFC and Zuffa.
