When UFC 146 was announced as an all-heavyweight card with a UFC heavyweight title fight between Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem on top, people (such as myself) hailed it as one of the best cards of the year immediately. It certainly didn't turn out that way, at least on paper, due to all the changes. Just a couple of months later we have a card that dwarfs the issues UFC 146 went through. The Cursed Card of Calgary. UFC 149.
Let's take a look at how the card looked on May 9th, the day that the UFC officially announced the main and co-main events:
Jose Aldo vs. Erik Koch [FW title]
Mauricio Rua vs. Thiago Silva
Michael Bisping vs. Tim Boetsch
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cheick Kongo
Siyar Bahadurzada vs. Thiago Alves
It should be noted that Siyar was a replacement himself, stepping in for Yoshihiro Akiyama the day before. Things were calm for almost a month after that. Tickets went on sale. Calgarians were hyped. Then came the month of doom. You can check out all the changes and what the current card looks like after the jump.
On June 4th, the UFC officially announced Silva and Alves were off the card. Alves was replaced by Canadian Chris Clements, and the UFC tried to book Shogun vs. Glover Teixeira to no avail.
On June 6th, Bisping bowed out of the card and Hector Lombard moved over from UFC on Fox 4 to take on Boetsch. In exchange, Shogun was moved over to that card.
Former Dream champion Bibiano Fernandes had been announced for the card against Roland Delorme, but he cleared up his situation on June 9th by stating he never signed with the organization at all.
On that same day, UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo was scratched from the card due to injury. His bout with Erik Koch was postponed, and a UFC interim bantamweight title fight between Urijah Faber and Renan Barao because the new main event.
Then came the final nail in the coffin so far - Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira was removed from the card yesterday because he hadn't fully recovered from his broken arm. He was replaced by Shawn Jordan.
So fight fans, here's how the Calgary main card looks right now:
Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao [Interim BW title]
Hector Lombard vs. Tim Boetsch
Shawn Jordan vs. Cheick Kongo
Siyar Bahadurzada vs. Chris Clements
Court McGee vs. Nick Ring
