On one side of the cage you have a top prospect that hasn't quite lived up to his reputation yet, but is still very young. On the other side you have a crafty TUF winner looking to break through at 145. Charles Oliveira (15-2, 1 NC, 3-2, 1 NC UFC) meets Jonathan Brookins (13-4, 2-1 UFC).
Neither fighter is currently ranked at featherweight in the USA Today/BE Consensus Rankings, but Oliveira is already getting votes after just one FW win and could crack the list with a solid win over Brookins. Brookins could possibly get votes with a win, but probably needs another to grace the top 25. This featherweight TUF Live Finale bout is the third bout of the main card and will air live on FX. The FX broadcast begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
How do these two stack up?
Oliveira: 22 years old | 5'10" | 73" reach
Brookins: 26 years old | 6'0" | 74' reach
What have these two done recently?
Oliveira: W - Eric Wisely (SUB) | L - Donald Cerrone (TKO) | NC - Nik Lentz
Brookins: W - Vagner Rocha (KO) | L - Erik Koch (UD) | W - Michael Johnson (UD)
How did these two get here?
Oliveira entered the UFC as a highly-touted lightweight prospect, and opened a lot of eyes with a 41-second submission of Darren Elkins. He then submitted Ultimate Fighter winner Efrain Escudero to pick up his second submission of the night bonus in a row. A quick loss to Jim Miller was a big setback, but he rebounded with what he thought was a win over Nik Lentz. It was later changed to a no-contest due to an illegal knee. Another loss to Donald Cerrone set him down to 145, where he picked up his third sub of the night bonus with a sweet finish of Eric Wisely. He'll look to move up the featherweight ladder quickly with another victory over a TUF champion.
Brookins came to the attention of the masses when he fought Jose Aldo in Aldo's second fight in the WEC. He got TKO'd by the future champ in the third round. After a fight on the very first Bellator card, he became a contestant on TUF 12 and managed to win the lightweight portion of the show. He dropped his next bout to Erik Koch, but rebounded with a solid knockout of Vagner Rocha. A win over Oliveira would probably be the biggest victory of his career.
Why should you care?
Both of these guys are tall, well-rounded featherweights with exciting styles. It should be an excellent fight.
