TUF Live Finale Fight Card Primer: Jake Ellenberger Vs. Martin Kampmann

LAS VEGAS, NV - MAY 31: (L-R) Opponents Jake Ellenberger and Martin Kampmann face off after making weight during The Ultimate Fighter Live weigh in at the Palms Casino Resort on May 31, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

The top of the welterweight division is stalled at the moment, waiting for champion Georges St. Pierre to return so he can face interim champ Carlos Condit. In the meantime, the rest of the top welterweights are jockeying for position to see who gets the winner of that bout. One of the two men in the TUF Live Finale main event will have a great claim to that bout after tonight. Which one will it be? Jake Ellenberger (27-5, 6-1 UFC) meets Martin Kampmann (19-5, 10-4 UFC) in a five round affair.

Ellenberger is currently ranked at third in the world at welterweight in the USA Today/BE Consensus Rankings, while Kampmann sits in the ninth position. Ellenberger isn't going anywhere rankings-wise with a win, but he will definitely cement himself into a possible title fight. Kampmann will definitely move up a few spots with a win. This welterweight TUF Live Finale bout is the main event of the night and will air on FX. The FX broadcast begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

How do these two stack up?

Ellenberger: 27 years old | 5'10" | 73" reach
Kampmann: 30 years old | 6'0" | 72" reach

What have these two done recently?

Ellenberger: W - Diego Sanchez (UD) | W - Jake Shields (TKO) | W - Sean Pierson (KO)
Kampmann: W - Thiago Alves (SUB) | W - Rick Story (UD) | L - Diego Sanchez (UD)

How did these two get here?

Ellenberger has had a stellar UFC career so far, only dropping a close split-decision to current interim champion Carlos Condit in his debut. He has reeled off six straight wins since then and finished four of those bouts. Victories over names like Jake Shields and Diego Sanchez have him in the running for an eventual title shot, and a win over Kampmann here would further his case a lot.

Kampmann had a solid 4-1 run at middleweight but made the drop to 170 after a loss to Nate Marquardt. His only decisive loss at welterweight so far was a TKO loss to Paul Daley (where he never actually got knocked down). His other two losses, to Jake Shields and Diego Sanchez, were both razor-thin decisions that could have gone either way. He has picked up wins over Rick Story and Thiago Alves in his last two bouts and will look to climb back into the top five with a win over the tough Ellenberger.

Why should you care?

This is the most relevant welterweight bout for the next few months. That right there should probably be enough for you.
