UFC on Fox 3 is in the books, and the next Fox show will take place on August 4th in Los Angeles. A few bouts have been announced for the card so far, including a middleweight fight between former Bellator champion Hector Lombard and Brian Stann. Stann was a guest analyst for the show last night along with UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, and he confirmed that his bout will serve as the main event of the Staples Center show. Dana White also confirmed a few days ago that Lombard could earn a title shot with a win (via Sergio Non of USA Today):
"When you talk about cleaning out a division, there's always another guy who comes up, even for a guy like Anderson," White said Thursday while speaking to a group of several reporters. "We just brought in Lombard. (If) Lombard beats Stann. ... that (title) fight makes sense."
That fight might be a tough sell as a main event for a Fox show. With the early ratings showing that UFC on Fox 3 didn't do very well with a weaker card names-wise, is it wise to use Stann (who is admittedly quite popular) against a guy making his UFC debut as a main event? And if Stann beats Lombard, will he earn a title shot of his own? Probably not. In the meantime, we'll see who wins the second bout between UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen on July 7th at UFC 148 and go from there.
