Assan Njie was featured in Leland Roling's 2011 Middleweight Scouting Report as the #10 ranked prospect. Dropping down to the 170lb class seems like a good move for the Swedish fighter as he attempts to raise his stock in the eyes of top promotions. Zone FC could be his last stop on the European regional circuit before stepping up to the bigs.
Bearing one of my favorite nicknames in all of sports, Rodney "Sho Nuff the Masta" Wallace heads to Poland to take on Mamed Khalidov in a 185lb clash for the KSW title. Not an enviable task in the least, but should he overcome Wallace will be a hot signing back in the States. I've nearly given up hope that Khalidov will ever fight for the UFC...anyone care to cheer me up with any news on that front?
Sergei Kharitonov comes out of MMA limbo to face Tony Lopez at United Glory. No clear reason why he wasn't picked up by the UFC after the Strikeforce HW exodus, but he did fight on a UG kickboxing card last month so he shouldn't show any signs of ring rust. Lopez's heavyweight sojourn has been up and down but as of late he's riding a seven fight win streak, all by stoppage. There should be some eyes on this fight as they are ranked 21 and 22 (by Fight Matrix) in the heavyweight division.
Jeremy Horn goes for his 90th recorded win on the same United Glory card. Still not sure if it's at 185, 205, or catch-weight for the Iowa barnstormer.
Invicta FC has a headliner for their next feature on July 28 involving a scrap between Strikeforce and EliteXC veteran Shayna Baszler and Olympian Sara McMann. Baszler returns after a long layoff but was at one time ranked as high as #2 at 135. McMann is undefeated in her short MMA career and is coming in off a huge win over Hitomi Akano at ProElite 3. IFC 1 was a pretty amazing step forward for women's MMA and it looks like they will continue to put on meaningful cards.
A bit of a surprise signing by the UFC in snatching Jamie Varner out of his nightmare tour of the regional circuit. Varner had recently signed with Legacy FC but an injury to Evan Dunham opened up a spot under the big lights. Bad news is that his return comes against wunderkind Edson Barboza.
