UFC and Bellator vet Roger Huerta has signed on with ONE FC. Good to see him back in action but taking on Phil Baroni at what I assume to be 170 (or possibly higher?) seems a poor decision. Huerta himself said he would never fight at anything above lightweight again, but when money talks perspectives change. Huerta's had a rough ride since subbing Clay Guida way back in '07 and is currently mired in a 1-5 slump, but at one time he was top 10 at 155.
Battle Xtreme Championships kicks off their inaugural show with respectable card on June 16 featuring the likes of veterans Rafael Dias, Sara McMann, Drew McFedries, and the return of Rory Markham. BXC - The Rise will stream live on Sherdog June 16.
Sara McMann pulls an overtime shift and also headlines Invicta FC's second card against Shayna Baszler. Invicta's July 28 card also features Strikeforce vets Hitomi Akano, Alexis Davis, Amanda Nunes and Julia Budd. Other notables include former Elite XC fighter Kelly Kobold vs Vanessa Porto and Bellator vet Carla Esparza vs Sarah Schneider. Yet another great line-up that puts the best female MMA fighters in the spotlight.
Strikeforce wakes up from it's slumber and finally signs someone- Japanese lightweight standout and current DEEP champ Mizuto Hirota. Hirota will face Pat Healy in what looks to be a title contender fight. If Strikeforce's plans actually extend beyond next year, they really need to look at signing more fighters in all weight classes...or so says Captain Obvious here.
Both Mike Thomas Brown and Jason Miller had been talking retirement after UFC 146, but both backed off those statements by the next day. Brown wanted to give himself another two weeks before making a decision, while Mayhem said in his interview with Ariel Helwani that he's retired "for the foreseeable future" meaning he hasn't closed that door completely. Brown is 38 and has had a long career full of great fights, a WEC title, and two UFC stints in different weight classes, so seeing him retire on a two fight win streak would be a great cap to his career. Miller however is only 31 and probably needs a long break to think about whether or not to continue fighting. I hope he decides to continue, but after reaching the top promotion in the world and performing badly (not to mention pissing off the boss man) it would be a very long, hard road back. Hey there's always Strikeforce's thin roster, he might get a title shot right? Er, maybe not.
