In the main event bout at Junior dos Santos successfully defended his title for the first time with a second-round TKO victory over former champion Frank Mir. The somewhat anti-climactic finish came at 3:04 of the second round. After nearly finishing the fight at the end of the first round, JDS turned it on in the second and hurt Mir a few times. The came the finish., UFC heavyweight champion
JDS landed a straight right that sent Mir falling straight backwards onto his back. Dos Santos swarmed with a few punches, but wisely stepped out and asked Mir to stand up again. Mir couldn't though, and one more hilarious-looking hammerfist led the referee to call the bout off.
What was the high spot of this fight?
There were a ton of highlights, but my favorite thing was the one last hammerfist square in Mir's face right at the end.
Where do these guys go from here?
Dos Santos will be facing a familiar foe in his next bout - Cain Velasquez. Dos Santos won the title from Velasquez by knocking him out in 64 seconds at UFC on Fox 1 last November. There wasn't any other obvious challenger at the moment though, so it'll be Cain once again.
Mir stepped up to the plate when Alistair Overeem was forced out of the bout, but couldn't get the fight to the floor and got lit up on the feet. He's still extremely dangerous though, and isn't going anywhere. If there's anything to the rumors of Brock Lesnar's UFC return, that would be a natural matchup.
Watch it now, later or never?
Now. Junior looked excellent in the bout and it's well worth a watch.
