Chael Sonnen went back on TSN's Off The Record with Michael Landsberg (a show he'd previously walked off of) about a week ago, and when doing so a bit of interesting news was dropped. It appears that WWE legend, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin is Sonnen's strength and conditioning coach. Not only is Austin working with Sonnen for the UFC 148 rematch with Anderson Silva, but Chael says that he has been working with him for his last three bouts.
Here's the video:
Quotes after the jump...
From the video:
I don't believe I've ever mentioned that. As a matter of fact, part of my arrangement with Mr. Austin is that I don't get to into it. So you're gonna have to let me sidestep this one. But look, this isn't anything new. I've worked with him for the last three fights. He's a strength and conditioning coach, he has me out to the ranch, puts me through hell for thirty days and that's what we use to jumpstart our camp. But, he doesn't want to be involved, so I'm not going to involve him.
It should be noted that, in addition to his career as a pro-wrestler (where strength and conditioning is certainly of value), Austin was a pretty damn good football player in his day, competing at the NCAA level. So he certainly isn't a novice when it comes to the foundations of fitness.
Also in the video, Sonnen goes off on a tangent about asking Austin what he would do if he had to go to Brazil to promote a fight. After using Austin's "What?" shtick from his WWE days, Chael says that Austin told him "I'd show up, I'd raise hell and I'd leave."
