Finding myself severed from a 13-year-long relationship, I'm doing what any real man would do to get back on his feet: philosophizing with my cats, breathing new life into my get-rich plan involving the sale of flavored cereal milk, and watching a shit-ton of movies while hiding from the brutish realities of this foul year of our Lord.
I'm looking for suggestions on creatively unique flicks that I may not have seen. I detest almost all mainstream movies and prefer the independent type that stray from the norm. I've always been a Tarantino mark and also like Scorsese and Coppola, plus some other popular classics like Fight Club, Memento, Sin City, etc. I love visually stunning directors like Tarsem Singh (The Fall is a great under-rated movie) but was rather disappointed with The Immortals.
I'm devouring like a movie a day, so I'm hoping to receive suggestions on lesser known gems. I have a penchant for violent and mind bending themes, but have a wide range and generally appreciate anything with captivating acting or a unique flavor.
The video above is from Dead Man's Shoes and one of my favorite scenes of all time. Recently, I semi-enjoyed stumbling upon shockingly twisted flicks like Irreversible and Red, White and Blue on Netflix. I also liked Acolytes and realized the chick in that movie plays "Seppia" on the new Spartacus. (The original Spartacus is by far my favorite series in television history -- wasn't digging the new one but find myself warming up to the new guy a little.)
I must warn you that my first aspiration was film making and I've probably seen all the fairly obvious ones. Still, don't hold back in suggesting anything -- my potential happiness is in your hands.
