16 months after it started, the Strikeforce Heavyweight World Grand Prix tournament will finally commence as the promotion announced that Josh Barnett vs. Daniel Cormier will happen on Saturday, May 19, expected for the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA.
Barnett (31-5) submitted Brett Rogers last June and Sergei Kharitonov last September on his way to the finals. The former UFC Heavyweight Champion is riding an eight fight win streak with his last defeat coming in December 2006.
The undefeated Cormier (9-0) was originally a tournament alternate, picking up a unanimous decision win over Jeff Monson last June. When Alistair Overeem was dumped from the tourney, the U.S. Olympic wrestler took his place and knocked out Antonio Silva in the first round last September to advance to the finals. In that fight, Cormier broke his hand which caused the fight to be delayed until it fully healed.
Showtime released a video preview for the May 19th event on YouTube, expected to be formally announced during the main card broadcast of Saturday's Ronda Rousey vs. Miesha Tate event.
