From Olympic Champion to Biggest Loser loser to Olympic Hopeful. Rulon Gardner steps back into competitive competition in hopes of making the 2012 Greco Roman team as a heavyweight. A large man, definitely overweight for the heavyweight limit as it stands, but also a man with luck against death that would make The Roadrunner call bullshit.
Three struggles stand in his way, his weight, his age and Dremiel Byers.
His battle is uphill, his odds are terrible, but I can't help but be motivated for the only person to ever quit The Biggest Loser.
Even though he beat one of my favorite athletes of all time in Karelin, he is still one of those feel-good stories, where you want to see him win, and if he does make it and win, Disney might have wished they made Rulon Gardner instead of John Carter, or any movie for that matter.
If anyone has seen the latest "Rock Center" With Brian Williams, perhaps I'm the only one who has not passed the year 1996 and still watches these kinds of shows, but it had an in-depth interview that was pretty interesting not only as a current affairs piece related to Rulon, but as a general insight into the Roman Greco tryouts, even if it's a brief glimpse.
The video of the segment is here. Enjoy and tell me if you are pulling for Rulon or if you just had an interesting lunch.
