Seriously, I just now realized how bizarre and arbitrary the limit is. Does anyone know why the athletic commissions chose this number?
I think the HW division can be vastly improved with either of the following 2 suggestions:
1. Set the weight limit lower to something like 245 lbs., or
2. Get rid of the 265 lbs. limit completely.
Option 1 would put more pressure on HW fighters to be as athletic as fighters in the other divisions. The idea is to force HW's to go through the torture of weightcutting so they're fit enough to not gas out in the first round like they normally do. This would've only prevented Brock Lesnar from fighting, but he's retired, so whatever. Everyone else in the top 25 rankings looks more than capable of trimming off 15 lbs. of fat and then cutting another 20 lbs. or so. Come fight night, the HW's should now be shredded dudes with 6 packs instead of beer bellies.
Option 2 would basically shit on Option 1 and fully transform the HW division into a circus sideshow. Fuck it, it's not like HW's are known for being skilled and athletic anyway, so why not go the full mile? If Cole Konrad's allowed to keep that fat pouch of his, I don't know why HMC, Zulu, and Sapp should have to starve themselves down to 265. Get rid of the weight limit, and let HW's return to the UFC 1 days of freaks versus freaks, while the other divisions maintain their professionalism.
