Suddenly Diego Sanchez vs. Jake Ellenberger Meas A LOT
The UFC needs to do everything they can to ensure Georges St-Pierre comes back healthy, wealthy, and wise. "Rush"ing him back into action because of this Nick Diaz pissing bong water (part II) is a huge mistake and could cause GSP problems. Now if he is really healthy, yes, he should come back. But the back-up plan could be just as exciting.
I think the winner of Diego Sanchez vs. Jake Ellenberger should fight Carlos Condit next.
Why? First off, the UFC doesn't necessarily abide by conventional rankings. Lyoto Machida was 1-2 in his previous three fights before fighting Jon Jones. Rampage Jackson got his shot after losing to Rashad Evans two fights before. Timing and name recognition means almost as much.
If Diego Sanchez beats Ellenberger he will be on a three fight win-streak with Ws over Paulo Thiago, Martin Kampmann, and Ellenberger. Its not the worst winning streak in the world, he's a big name, and the fact that him and Condit trained together would make things very interesting. Sanchez always comes to fight (except against Hathaway) and is a name that can sell. Ellenberger is an up-and-coming fighter who knocked out Jake Shields and fought Condit before (to a split decision) and that story writes itself. The UFC has also had interim champions defend their interim titles before (Nog vs. Mir I).
None of these guys are the "real" champion anyways because none of them have beat GSP. So why not, while the champ fully recovers, we have a couple of young studs fighting each other?

I was thinking the same thing actually. Seeing the list of Welterweights, Koscheck just won against Pierce, but I don’t think anyone is calling for a Title shot after that performance. Hendricks, despite beating Fitch in 14 seconds, still looks like he’ll need another win to justify giving him a Title shot. The winner of Akiyama vs Shields is more of a fight to get one of these fighters back on track. The winner of MacDonald vs Mills would still need one or two big fights before getting into contention. There is an argument for the winner of Kampmann vs Alves though facing Condit.

i say hendricks vs koscheck and if ellenberger wins he fights condit but if sanchez wins he fights alves-kampmann winner

I don’t think Sanchez will get a title shot if he wins though.

Why not?
If Sanchez beats Ellenberger, he’ll be on a three fight win streak over Paulo Thiago, Martin Kampmann, and Jake Ellenberger. The Kampmann and Ellenberger fights are also main events, and the Paulo Thiago fight was FOTN. Diego got a Title shot at Lightweight against BJ Penn by beating Joe Stevenson and Clay Guida. He is a fan favorite, and UFC brass seems to like him. If it were someone else who wasn’t as well-known or popular, then I can see not giving that fighter a Title shot, but with Diego Sanchez, I would think that the UFC would want to give him a Title shot.

He didn’t beat Kampmann. Kampmann got robbed.

And yet, people think Diaz beat Condit. They gave Diego that fight on “moving forward” bullshit.

I actually think that he got robbed as well, but it doesn’t really matter what a bunch of hardcore MMA fans think. Diego Sanchez has the W on his record, and if he somehow gets past Ellenberger (which I don’t think he will), then I can see him getting a Title shot. He has shown to get Title shots on less in his record.

Not according to Dana. And that is the only opinion he cares about.

For me, there are two choices for who Condit could fight while waiting on GSP, it could be the Sanchez-Ellenberger winner, or it could be the Alves-Kampmann winner.
Ellenberger lost a split decision to Condit, Kampmann won a split decision over Condit…either of those rematches would be compelling….I personally would like to see Condit try and avenge the Kampmann loss.

If Kampmann wins I agree
But I doubt they’re going to match up Alves and Condit. I don’t think they would have a Kampmann/Condit rematch before a Alves/GSP rematch.
That said Hendricks is also on the shot list.

He is the champion
What’s the point in having an interim belt if it isn’t defended?
by discoandherpes on Feb 10, 2012 3:54 AM EST up reply actions
Because interm belts are hardly worth anything but being number 2. GSP's belt is what is so important.
It's not about that. Anything can happen in a fight and their is some chance.
For instance I think Hendriks can only KO Fitch 1-10 fights maybe 2. But he got it that fight. There is some luck involved so he shouldn’t have to fight contenders when he has earned his shot.
Still, then there is no point to having an interm belt
You might as well just made Diaz/Condit just be for the number one contender

I'd call him THE champion. Not the "interim" champion.
People shat a brick when Cung Le wouldn’t defend his belt, and eventually he was stripped, but nothing is being done about GSP, sadly. GSP is doing squat right now and hasn’t defended his belt for more than a year. It will be almost a year and a half by the time he fights again, or something, and that is just not cool.
Even GSP agrees with me:
"The way I see it, I am not the champion anymore on Saturday night. I have not fought since April, against my will, but I understand the champion must fight. You have to put the belt on the line in order to call yourself champion, the best in the world. Right now I am not the best in the world, I am injured."
By all intents and purposes Carlos Condit is the welterweight champion of the world.
