There's been a disturbing trend developing on BE over the last 6 months or so and it needs to be addressed. There are way too many people polluting the only MMA site I can tolerate with stupid, worthless shit that offers zero value of any kind. Sifting through the various layers of ignorance and idiocy to find something insightful or entertaining is turning into way more work than should be necessary. I'm making a heart-felt plea to all moderators to start banning these jackasses with a whole lot less restraint than has been shown lately.
It's not that I have a problem with opposing views; there are plenty of people on this site I have spirited arguments with that aren't a complete waste of my time, energy and soul. But I hate stupidity, and BE is becoming infected with it.
I'm not sure how much BE's reputation for being elitist is a factor, but I personally am proud to be part of a community that sets standards for conduct and quality. It's why I left Sherdog in the first place, because here, finally, I could have an actually intelligent conversation without being called a fag, shit face, or any of the other wonderful nicknames that Internet mouth-breathers have scrawled out in Crayon and then transferred to a comment box.
Maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm just having a bad day. But I don't think so. BE was something special when I found it in 2009 and it's still the only MMA site I check with any frequency. But holes are starting to appear and standards are starting to slip. Loosen the hammers in their holsters and start doing what needs to be done.

but generally the problem spew still gets generally dealt with by other commentators. A big controversy always bring it to a crescendo for a little while. I’ve been around here for almost 5 years, including lurking, and it doesn’t seem much changed to me in that regard. Still tons of smart cool people hanging around.

I’d say it’s selective memory. The Diaz lovers can’t remember Condit landing anything, and they can’t remember Diaz being ineffective. They only remember the moments where their hero shone. Similarly, the Condit lovers can’t remember Diaz landing anything, and they can’t remember Condit running away at all. They only remember the moments where their hero shone. It’s a well-known cognitive phenomenon. Confirmation bias ensures that even on rewatching a fight, you may well fail to get your view in line with reality.
Honestly, if you think this was a one-sided fight and not one where both guys had their moments, and both guys occasionally looked bad, I think you’re biased. But if this fanpost is about the Condit/Diaz fallout, I think the banhammer is a bit extreme. Just because someone is (1) not very articulate and (2) don’t agree with you doesn’t mean they deserve a ban.

I have thought this for a while. To me, a lot of the ragging on Fitch/GSP crossed the line from “hey, they’re great fighters but I don’t want to watch them” (which is in itself a comment of dubious value, even if true) to fighter bashing. maybe i should be more aggressive with flagging, but sometimes i don’t feel it’s really my place to make the call on what is legitimate commentary and what is just lowering the level of the debate.
Personally I am embarassed to admit that I am actually a little bit happy Condit/Diaz was a little disppointing, as it may take the wind out of sails of the just bleed crowd for a while.

the sport is growing and it is drawing a wider base of fans? I’ve been on BE for a little while now and it hasn’t seemed much worse to me but maybe its been a slow process and I just havent noticed.. As others have said, after close fights the shit show picks up a little but that is to be expected. Honestly some of the dumbassery is kinda of funny because it gives everybody something to rip on. Thats my 2 cents.

Unless I am missing something
There don’t appear to be any rules for noobs anywhere – so anyone coming in from other MMA forums (myself included) don’t know what is acceptable here and pretty much everywhere else is like the Wild West.
When people sign up for BE should they get an email with a list of rules or something? It might not make any difference really but just putting it out there. I know I may have benefited from such a thing when I joined!
