Does it sound familiar?
As I watched Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz the other night I scored the fight 48-47 for Condit, and thought it was a pretty clear cut victory. I was also watching my twitter in between rounds and was surprised at how many people were scoring the fight for Diaz. I knew when the winner was announced that Bloodyelbow was about to blow up, and I haven't been disappointed over the last few days as it seems like everyone has voiced their opinion.
Yesterday afternoon as I was running around town before the Super Bowl, it hit me what fight this reminded me of. BJ Penn v Frank Edgar 1. That was a fight that was very close, and seemed to divide MMA fans almost right down the middle, with very strong opinions on both sides. I remembered that as I watched that fight I was scoring it for Edgar, but as soon as it was over one of my friends called bitching about how BJ got robbed.
The similarity revolves around the style that Edgar and Condit used to win. While not exactly the same, because Condit uses a lot more kicks, they both used a stick, and move strategy to avoid getting sucked into their opponents strengths. Diaz just like BJ failed to adjust his game plan and could not adapt to what his opponent brought to the table.
Now it sounds like the similarity might not end here. Dana White is open to a rematch, while GSP continues to heal. In the Edgar v Penn rematch, Edgar proved he was the better fighter and left no doubt. Could Condit do the same? My first thought was that I'd want to see Condit fight Ellenberger next for the belt, but the more I think about it, lets see Carlos and Nick do it again, just so we as MMA fans can put a controversial fight behind us with a clear cut conclusion.

I could’ve sworn that everyone thought BJ one that fight. Like 80% of the people.

INEPT coming for the season 2 BECW title.
I thought BJ Penn won at least 3 rounds maybe even 4 in Abu Dhabi. One round for sure for Frankie was round 4 I believe because he got a takedown. Maybe BJ’s career would be different with that win. It seems to me that fighter that been in the MMA game for a while with a sort of “Just Scrap” stalking approach are starting to fail against the guys that spend way too much time on the outside and wait for the time to run out. (Ex. Rampage, BJ Penn, Nick Diaz, etc.) It’s just all about adjusting to modern times and keeping the points on the cards in mind but don’t forget you are in a fight that other people are watching for action.

BJ had no reason to adjust his gameplan
he was countering the fuck out of Edgar and winning the fight.
You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.
And NEW!

I was so pissed off that day

Sherdog play by play had BJ winning also
I thought I was the only one that thought it was a robbery or that I was just biased because I’m a Penn fan.

Round 2
Penn jabs with his left hand to kickoff the second period. Penn lands a hard left hand and Edgar fails on a shot. Penn checks a low kick. Penn’s jab has set the tempo. He lands it at will from a wide array of ranges as Edgar moves laterally. Penn mixes in his left hook and keeps Edgar away. Another left-hook lead finds its target for the champion. Edgar is moving beautifully, but whenever he plants to strike, Penn’s jab greets him. Edgar takes Penn down with a single, but he doesn’t pounce. Penn stands up and lands an uppercut at the bell as Edgar grazes a right hook.

Edgar sneaks in another left hook and it leaves its mark on Penn’s right eye. Penn now has small cuts and swelling under both eyes. Edgar fakes a right hand and drops levels for a single. Penn effortlessly defends it and cracks Edgar with a right hook. Edgar feints with a single and connects with a kick to the body. Penn stuffs another takedown. A low kick from Edgar is checked.

The fighters clash heads at the 2:40 mark. Luckily, neither fighter is cut. Penn is in complete control as his jab and short right stop any Edgar offense in its tracks. Edgar rushes in and misses a wild left and a jumping knee. Edgar’s right eye is busted up from a left hook.

Edgar lands a double jab and a right-hand lead. Edgar drops down for a single and Penn shucks him off. Again Edgar drops for a takedown and Penn stops it. Edgar lands a low kick and a left hand. My point really wasn’t to re-live the BJ/Edgar decision (we could argue that all day long, and I have to go to work), it was just to point out the similarity between the fan reaction, and to say I was in favor of a re-match in this case as well. BJ/Edgar 1 was 2 years ago, and it still gets a strong reaction, I fully expect the same from those who scored this fight for Diaz a few years from now.
Movement and judges
Many of our judges also judge boxing.
Boxing rewards movement. Manny Paccio wins how? Decision every time. He is the ultimate pitter patter fighter winning by just work ethic. That is what Carlos Condit did. He flat out worked Diaz the cardo machine.
He kept moving kept control of the fight because Diaz wanted a stand up brawl. The fact he could not get his style of fight shows exactly why judges familier with boxing scored it for Condit.
Was Diaz frustrated? If you can say he had to resort to taunting because he could not hit Condit – then who controlled the fight? Do you think the judges miss a fighter being frustrated? Then a close round goes to the fighter who is calm and cool, methodically breaking his opponent down.
MMA fans want to see a Korean Zombie vs Garcia style fight or a Pat Barry and Kongo. It is in all honesty a brawl with little skill involved. Condit masterfully exposed every weakness in the style Diaz chooses. Diaz never adapted and so if you are going to be angry at someone look right towards Stockton because Diaz could have raised his footspeed or cut off Condit more but instead he got beat by a guy who stayed moving and hit when it was to his advantage.
Condit won the fight and he employed the method that Diaz himself often uses – jab and move except it was kick and move. Diaz never countered the kicks or found answer to them. Just recall Faber vs Aldo to see what leg kicks can do.
If I were Condit
I wouldn’t want a rematch with Diaz, because he knows how close the last fight was and he might well lose the rematch. I don’t think he would be wrong to ask to put off that rematch untill he has had the chance for a big fight against GSP.
That being said, the UFC would love a rematch. The rematch would be pretty marketable because they would get loads of grumpy people from Diaz’s camp to talk about how he won the first fight. Then they still have the chance that GSP will fight Diaz in the winter, the fight that they really want to see.
