UFC 144 Video: Dana White Posts Video Blog On UFC 143 Backstage
Even though UFC president Dana White said this Saturday's UFC 144 wouldn't harken back to the days of PRIDE, that didn't stop him from wearing a PRIDE 1 shirt to kick off his first video blog of fight week, covering all the backstage stuff from UFC 143.
Some of the highlights in the nine minute clip include:
- White calling Matt Riddle vs. Henry Martinez the biggest mismatch in UFC history and Riddle being a bit excited after the victory.
- Chris Cope asking if he was out cold.
- Alex Caceres not remembering he kicked Edwin Figueroa twice below the equator.
- Mike Pierce shrugging off the severity of a deep cut on top of his head.
- Roy Nelson saying he won at least two rounds over and over and over again. He was joking, I think. Zuffa co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta had a good chuckle about it anyway.
- The in-cage reaction when Nick Diaz lost and Diaz backstage explaining how he saw the fight going down. "I'm not going to no press conference," was one notable quote. This was the most I've seen Diaz talking open and honestly, possibly ever.

Fun to watch him get pounded by a huge dude on the computer in my room, but if that’s not happening, I’m not really interested.

I despise him as well.
But I loved watching him get beat up by someone 20 pounds lighter than him.

and he still managed to get his ass whooped for a good portion of the fight.

I thought Martinez won. He won the 1st and the 2nd, IMO. The only good offense Riddle had in the 2nd was that flurry at the end, and apparently that won him the fight in the eyes of the judges. Stupid.

I thought Martinez won the second as well.
The only thing Riddle landed was a few good body kicks. I think Martinez could’ve won if he had had enough time to prepare and get in good shape, regardless of the size difference.

But when he was talking to Diaz later he seemed like he meant it. Hard to judge what’s happening when you’re actually fighting, I guess.

I'm pretty sure Roy wasn't serious.
He seemed to be riffing off Diaz and going on and on about winning those last two wounds in his typical deadpan way.
"You've got Floyd Mayweather making $25 million. He can't stop a double-leg..." Nick Diaz.
He said that when the Dr. was checking him out too.
Which was either before or during the Diaz/Condit fight.
Interesting...
…I figured pud333 got this one right, and Roy was joking around at the expense of Diaz but if he was talking about it when he was getting looked at by the doctor….

Maybe his toughness is a factor.
Could be that Roy didn’t think Werdum’s shots did much damage. Or, it could be that they did so much damage that he forgot the parts of the fight that Fabricio was blasting his face with knees.
by LemonSqueeze on Feb 21, 2012 7:18 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah, but unless your name is Willie Pep
You gotta be landing shots to win rounds. Whether Fabricio’s shots were hurting or not is irrelevant cos Roy wasn’t doing much in rounds 2 or 3.

this is actually pretty acurate
i think he probably did forget chunks of the fight, it’s not uncommon to forget a lot in a fight even if you don’t take a lot of damage, at least until you watch the tape.
Seems that way
Even Caceres wasn’t sure he’d landed low 2x on Figueroa, and he wasn’t getting blasted like Nelson.
They may be professional fighters, but that still doesn’t make them immune to the fight or fight reactions and how that messes with your brain and instincts.

Yeah, I definitely think he was serious. It wouldn’t be the first time he’s a sore loser. I can’t really fault a guy for thinking it right after a fight though, maybe he changed his mind after he watched the tape.

I can imagine it’s pretty easy in the heat of the moment to feel that things were going a little more in your favour then they actually were.
I don’t begrudge anyone a little frustration after a close fight.

Yup, and even when it's not that close from the fighter it's understandable.
To mentally stay in a fight you’re losing you’ve got to cling to the sucess you have. That can easily make you remember that at most of the fight when it ends. I don’t think you can really blame for thinking he won a fight that went to decision right after it ends.

Weird seeing Nick Diaz talk in a coherent manner. He even looks directly at the camera a few times and ignores it. I was expecting him to grab the camera and destroy it once they were backstage. Makes me wonder whether the rambling Nick we usually get in interviews is more of an act than I thought.
I think it’s more a case of anxiety than being a fraud. Diaz isn’t really paying much attention to the fact that there’s a camera around, which could attribute to his more relaxed nature. I sincerely doubt the Nick Diaz when the cameras are turned to him, is the game guy walking around the gym on a daily basis. I don’t think he’s giving the finger to a blue belt during open mat time. Yet, I think when he’s got the lights on him that anxiety kicks in, and he feels the need to defend himself. It’s why he’s so aggressive and why he struggles to express himself properly.

Matt Riddle seems like he's a really nice guy.
Also, it’s very possible that Caceres didn’t remember the first nutshot after getting rocked by that headkick.
Also Nick’s corner is terrible. It’s hard to blame Diaz for not making adjustments when his corner is making it out like he’s winning every round.
Also Nelson thought he won that fight? He must have gotten hit harder than I thought.
Love the picture
Dana White looking like a D bag (no stretch), while wearing a Pride 1 shirt.
But whats the kicker, Muhammad Ali sitting in his [player cadillac right behind Dana.
Lorenzo's face when Roy is saying he won is priceless.
“Ummm…are you talking about the fight a few minutes ago where you got the donkey shit beat out of you for three rounds, Roy?”
These are my favorite bits of content the UFC puts out
The post-fight stuff really humanizes and puts a reality check on everything.
We get desensitized to what’s happening because we watch so many fights, but these guys really take a beating to entertain us. Nearly every fighter in the piece makes some sort of “that happened?” type comment regarding something that happened in their fight. Some of that I’m sure can be chalked up to getting lost in the action, but some of that is getting your head punched until it stops thinking.
Dana's scratch to the back of his head after the Diaz/Condit decision was announced
I know that scratch. I do it when I am slightly ticked-off or annoyed in an environment that requires restraint. I don’t think the decision went the way he wanted it to ;)

I would have chased him down but I was winning?
Lots of “I could’ve done more if I’d felt like it” kinda talk from Diaz. My read. He knew he lost and was putting up some quick psychological barriers to deflect. Everyone does it, but it was pretty blatant here. He needs to get away from all the yes men around him.
His corner told him he was winning
So he probably thought he was winning.
