Nick Diaz PSYC 101
This is a brief venture into the mental processes of Nick Diaz with regards to why his interviews go awry at times.
Skip to 8:48 of this video:
Reporter's question:
"Have you paid attention or heard what Georges has said about your fight
–that he's hoping and praying that you win."
What he meant:
"Have you paid attention or heard what Georges has said about your fight
–that he's hoping and praying that you win
[because he really wants to fight you]."
What Nick understood:
"Have you paid attention or heard what Georges has said about your fight
–that he's hoping and praying that you win
[because you guys are acting like you’re friends]."
Nick's consequent reaction:
"Yea you know what that's the kind of thing I'm talking about.
To me that's crazy.
I'm not over here trying to act crazy
you know
I'm straight up bro
You look at me.
you know
look into my eyes
You know what I'm saying?
I'm like
I'm not playing no games.
You know what I mean?
And uh,
see for you everything is a joke, okay?
And for me, I'm crazy, I'm you know I'm acting like it's fake craziness
but uh you know to me that's just realistic
you know um
get real bro
you know
What are you trying to say?
like uh
You guys are friends?
you know
These people are acting like they're friends now.
And that's not the case
you know what I mean
and uh
That's an act. That's crazy. To me that's crazy.
You gonna put on an act
like that
That's c'mon that's crazy.
Where I come from that's crazy so
you know?"
Reporters need to understand this communication gap and think about how they phrase their questions if they wish to avoid misunderstandings and hostile accusations by Diaz.
This communication gap may also be why we rarely see an insightful Nick Diaz interview.
The MMA world needs to find a journalist that smokes weed regularly (preferably a Stockton native with at least two felonies) to do ALL Diaz interviews.

I think people patronise Diaz a bit too much
We hear quite a lot about him being stupid, crazy, stoned. But he comes accross as really genuine if not a bit shy and confused by the cameras. Most of what he says in interviews is really sensible, he just isn’t a particularly articulate person.
Correction:
He just isn’t anparticularlyarticulate person.
Just kidding, but no I’m not.
I agree. He is very geniune and sensible. Does he care about the media, interviews? Our perception? No, not really, not at all. His attitude is simply, just let me fight, get paid, whatever man. Many fighters try to come off as polished modern athletes that want to build personal brands and increase their cash flow. Diaz couldn’t care less. Michael Jordan/ Kobe Bryant/ GSP scripted responses get really boring after a while. You appreciate them, but their just not genuine. Have you ever seen a post-game interview with Ron Artest Meta-World Peace? Or the unfiltered genius that is WarMachine?

I would argue he cares very much.
One of the concerns he keeps harping about is how editing can mislead people.
That says that he is very aware of the value of his image (or at least enough to not want to be portrayed as doing or thinking something that isn’t genuinely him).
Being abrasive or rude doesn’t necessarily make him indifferent if anything I would say guarded and paranoid.
“If I’m acting up or acting crazy I don’t want you guys filming that” <— this might not be word for word, but the gist of this quote from the same Helwani interview is I don’t want people to misinterpret my actions."

But that's exactly the problem
He cares, but he’s so socially inept (Asperger’s or a mild autism spectrum disorder, maybe?) that he really doesn’t understand how people read him. He’s not stupid at all, but there are significant gaps between his self-image, the image he wants to project, and how his audience construes his actions.

I couldn't put it better.
And because of that inability to project what he wants to be seen as (possibly due to one of those diagnosis) he is extremely self-conscious.
I think it’s wrong to say he wants to fight, get paid get, out because he doesn’t care, if anything the guy cares too much and, as you said, his inarticulateness causes him to bottle-up in interviews or be aggressive towards cameramen.

You guys are friends?
you know
These people are acting like they’re friends now.
To me, this sounds like Nick is talking about GSP and Condit, not himself and GSP.
