Explain It To Me: Ronda Rousey

Can someone explain this phenomenon? What has she done in this sport? I ask these questions not as a Ronda Rousey hater but as someone who truly doesn't understand why she's so popular. I know she kissed Gina Carano's butt, she got into a Twitter beef with Cris Cyborg, she's on a lot of those Elie Seckbach videos, and she talked her way into a title shot against Miesha Tate. Again all well and good, and it's certainly not unusual for a fighter to talk their way into a title shot or a big money fight they don't deserve. David Haye talked himself into a fight with Wladimir Klitschko, Chael Sonnen talked his way into a title fight with Anderson Silva. Now both Haye and Sonnen lost, although Sonnen's career has been built on being the guy who "Almost beat Anderson Silva". Now it's his right to maintain that career path although if I were him I would maybe shoot for a more lofty and more credible goal....but I'm just putting that out there.

I don't know, I like when fighters earn their glory. I respect champions and super stars who took on all comers and had legit opponents on their record. If you look at Chael Sonnen's record it reveals his overrated status as a fighter. He's not that good and he's not all that dynamic. But he talks and talks and that's fine, if that's your thing. Ronda Rousey might be the most overrated female fighter in mma right now because she's the typical fighter who despite having a thin record and one legit win on that record against Julia Budd, everyone loves to anoint her as the next big thing. Let's hold off until the fight with Miesha Tate before we start talking about all that. And again I'm not downing her because she mimics what a lot of boxers have done over the years. Trash talk is apart of the fight game, but so is the over hyped product who didn't deliver against a consistent line of top competition. She's going to face the best in women's mma as she goes forward and that's why crowning her the next queen is so pointless right now.

If she beats Miesha Tate I'll come around but until then she's just another fighter trying to make her name on some trash talk. The first round subs in 38 seconds is all well and good and it's impressive but let's see her do it against the best women out there on a regular basis. Kyle Symes called her the next Gina Carano with mma skills, she's been called the savior of women's mma. It...Gina....yeah I got nothing. It's hard for me to vouch for Gina Carano's mma career because she's just as overrated as Ronda but, but at least Gina Carano.....boy do I miss Marloes Coenen. Now there was a lady who didn't need hype or half naked photos to push her career.

So what do you guys think? Is the hype too much too fast? Is it warranted or should we wait until she has some more credible wins on her record?

Are we all suckers? Is she that good or are we all buying into some darn good hype? Explain this to me because I want to like her but I just don't understand this rush to put her above every other female fighter in the world.

I miss Marloes Coenen.

You need to check her background and do some research on your own.

Until then take it easy on this stuff.

yeah, what really is the big deal about her

why is everyone falling for this manufactured hype? why is everyone a mindless automaton

except for me; i'm the only one who can see through all this bullshit and you guys are all

idiotic sheep

Keep fighting the good fight brah. Come to think of it, I’m beginning to think you’re SheepleBuster in an alt account. srsly tho, she is an Olympic medalist in Judo. She has been absolutely running through everyone she has ever faced with quick armbar submissions in the first round. “Ronda by armbar” is the new “Rickson by armbar” except the shit is fucking true. She’s the most dominant female MMA fighter we’ve seen rise up through the ranks since Cris Cyborg. She’s also pretty cute and is very outspoken. The girl has massive upside right now and it should be obvious if you’ve seen her fights that she has the potential to be a big deal for WMMA.

He's also comfortably leaving out of his argument the fact that Ronda has also paid her dues.

Just not in MMA.

That the state of WMMA is embryonic so far is not her fault. Sure, it sucks for Kaufman, but so life goes.

How exactly did Chael Sonnen not deserve the first Silva title-shot?

Marquardt had been #2 MW for a while at that point.

the only thing I don't get is that some people act like she is the hottest f'cking woman on the planet

I mean, she is not ugly…I wouldn’t use that word to describe her…but I would also never use the word ‘hot’ to describe her.

I mean, she’s not some goddess in the looks department. Plenty of actresses, models, and ring girls are better looking. Hell, she isn’t even the hottest woman you can find in the realm of fighting….Miesha Tate and Gina Carano are both a lot better looking than her.

She talks a lot, and she has impressive wins…that’s good enough for me, I get the attention and the title shot. But I just never got why so many people thing she is so hot…I just don’t see it.

Everyone went nuts when she pulled her pants down a bit too far at one weigh in…but that felt totally staged for attention to me.

Ugh, I hate ranting on the haterade like this, because I don’t hate her, but with most hot women…or women typically thought by the masses to be hot, I can see it…but not with Rousey, not really at all.

Well...when you put it THAT way

Yes.

But either way…she’s had the instant celebrity effect, she’s good for business…or at least it’s probably best to assume she is…so I’d like to see her succeed.

I tend to root for the stan-out character type people…because those are the fighters that really draw attention and really get people excited for the fights and can bring new fans.

by Chris Groves on Feb 3, 2012 6:43 AM EST up reply actions

haha that probably came off more dickish than I intended (I was going for 45% dickishness)

I agree with you on the above, though I’ve been rooting for her and blogging about her since before her first pro fight (Fightlinker turned me on to her) before I knew her personality or how polarizing she’d become. Just her Judo background, her amateur fights… and her hotness. I believed she had a lot of potential, but she’s gone so far, so fast, that it’s kind of mindboggling. She’s very good for business, or at least good for increasing the visibility of WMMA, that’s for sure. If it were Tate-Kaufman coming up instead, there’d probably be a dearth of WMMA talk. Unless Rumble-Butt gifs count.

I’d like to see her really tested in the cage, but honestly, I think she is going to fucking run through Miesha (who I also really like and admire). Against Sarah Kaufman though… if and until Cyborg comes back into the picture, Kaufman is the real test, imo. No disrespect to Miesha.

I get your point and I think it's shared by many people

For me, its the package deal. Her killer judoka skills, outspoken personality, and she keeps it real. I’m not droolin over her looks, I just think she’s easy on the eyes, so to speak, and the substance of her character adds a lot of value to that makes her cool.

Pretty sure this is the stroylone

Of her fight with Miesha Tate. Rousey saying she’s great and Tate saying what you just said. I think the MMA community is pretty aware of the hype that’s inflated Rousey’s stature and that’s why this fight is exciting. Has she bitten off more than she can chew or is she as good as she thinks she is.

But if she had taken it slower (perhaps fighting Davis and Carmouche) she would have a much greater chance (even now, she has a really good chance). A loss at this point wont be good for her career.

Making Davis or Carmouche tap isn't going to get her better

She needs ring time (cage time?) to improve, and the only way she is going get cage time is by fighting girls on her level.

The only girls on her level are on the top.

by discoandherpes on Feb 3, 2012 11:51 AM EST up reply actions

I believe she could easily beat Davis and Carmouche, but not as quickly as her other fights. Those would be good fights for her to face someone who is not at the top but knows how to defend an armbar.

Unless she pulls off an Overeem and fights all drained with no cardio at 135.

That could be a problem.

Ronda is a burly girl at 145, so the drop to the lower weight class is gonna take some muscle away. It has to.

She may not be as strong during her fight against Miesha.

I don't know

If she really does walk around at 150, I don’t think it should be too much of a problem. She could probably diet a majority of the eight.

by discoandherpes on Feb 3, 2012 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

Yes. But if she’s watching what she eats, she’s going to, at some point, run into the issue of her having to take something other than that particular food that allows her to maintain her fast-twitch muscle fibers so that she can cut down with more ease.

It’s not that she won’t be athletic, or explosive (ha-ha-whatever), but that comparatively speaking, she won’t be as much as she used to be—especially since this will be her first time in a long time that she’s been at that weight. Now, factor in there that she’s had some major issues with bulimia years prior and you have a pretty random cocktail of athletic performance.

You start off as though you have no idea who Rousey is, and you’re just looking for some education…but then go on and list every single argument that has been brought up in a BE thread with Rousey’s name it, ever, with nothing new to add.

What, exactly, was the point of this post?

The Chael Sonnen example in the article is disingenuous. Before fighting Anderson Silva, Sonnen beat Dan Miller, Yushin Okami (top ten ranked), and Nate Marquardt (also top ten ranked). That’s a strong win streak for any Middleweight and is deserving of a Title shot.
As far as Rousey is concerned, there are a couple factors that bring her attention. She is part of Womens MMA that really doesn’t have many personalities, so she stands out by being so polarizing. Her Olympic background helps her credentials. It also helps that she has been armbarring all of her opponents in the first round. Also, many MMA fans find her attractive. She hasn’t really done anything for the sport at this point, but she is trying to by doing all this talking and getting attention, which in turns, gets attention to Womens MMA. I would imagine that her talking has made it so that some MMA fans who wouldn’t watch a Womens MMA bout would maybe want to watch Tate vs Rousey.
