Had my first MMA training session tonight!
So my first class in Pittsburgh was tonight and it went really well. This might be a little jumpy for my first training post but I am just so hyped about this!
My buddy Matt went up with me as well, another college wrestler, although he was a lot better than I was. We went through the free Intro class with head trainer Adam Milstead and it was awesome. I have have no stand up really, and learned proper stance, hand position, chin position a basic jab and cross, as well as a muay thai outside leg kick. My striking has a lot of work still to be done, but it was my first time. Matt told me he had trained on and off back home in Colorado and it showed. That and this kid is an athlete! Anyway after stand up we worked on submissions a little, learning a standing and ground guillotine, and then because we we catching on quickly, Adam showed us a arm in leg triangle as well. Other than my leg flexibility for the leg triangle, learning the submissions came really easily for both Matt and I. After class I filled out all the paperwork I needed and am going to start training full time tomorrow, with muay thai and wrestling transitions tomorrow. I will be busy with training, working, and classes but I will try to give an update to BE at least once a week or so, and hopefully as my technique and knowledge improves my writing can become clearer and more detailed. Thanks for the support you all have given me so far! The journey from when I started wrestling 12 years ago, to finally getting off my butt after 139 and deciding to do this, to today has been great! I am super excited to see what is in store in the future!

What kind of paperwork were you asked to fill in?
I know, I know, I’m asking about paperwork, but I’m always interested in what, exactly, is this kind of process like so that one can get started on this thing. I know it is a weird question.
I know there are liability forms and the like, but I’m not exactly sure.

Any MMA or TMA school...
has standard liability waivers. Essentially, they do their damnedest to make it impossible for you to sue them if you get injured as a result of your training, regardless of who may be at fault.
Some schools also have membership contracts, which I would recommend you avoiding, if possible (sometimes, the contracting is outsourced, which makes getting out of your contract hella hard.)
That’s usually the extent of the “paperwork”

About liability
As a trainer with my own insurance, I can tell you that a liability waiver doesn’t really count for much.
If you get hurt doing something that is not reasonably safe under the supervision of a professional, you can still sue.
For example, if a 250lb woman has a heart attack because I pushed her too hard, I can still be sued, because I should have known better.
Another example would be if I had an older sedentary person doing heavy squats and they hurt their back.
A judge would say that they reasonable expectation of safety under my supervision.

I know, but that's the theory behind waivers, anyway.
My TKD dojang used to do “birthday sparring” which was, essentially, a shark-tank (or fish bowl, depending on skill level) sparring marathon on your birthday, but only if you volunteered for it. One time, someone volunteered, got hurt, and successfully sued the dojang. That was the end of “birthday sparring” for anyone but the instructors.
It made me a sad panda.

You seem like a smart guy
So I figured you knew.
Just wanted to clear it up for anyone who ever wondered I guess.
That dude was a douche. Why would you sue for any injury in training?

Yeah it is just a standard liability contract
There is technically a membership contract, but it included wording allowing me to opt out if I choose to do so, but I have to notify them. I have Muay Thai and Wrestling tonight, which is good because I really need to work on my jab.
