Which upcoming PPV deserves a Primetime treatment?

UFC 145- Jon "Bones" Jones Vs. "Suga" Rashad Evans

Great story here. Jones coming off arguably the greatest year in MMA. Against the last man left in the LHW division that has a legitimate chance of beating him

UFC 146- Junior "Cigano" Dos Santos Vs. Alistair "The Reem" Overeem Another great fight here. Possibly one of the best heavyweight title fights ever. Both incredible strikers, however the Reem coming off a great year earning the most prestigious title a striker can hold.

UFC 147- Anderson "the Spider" Silva Vs. Chael "TRT Super Saiyan" Sonnen II Not much needs to be said about this fight. Rematch that has been long in the making. Will be lots of trash talked on one end. And will finally put to rest if what Chael did was only because Anderson wanted to teach him a BJJ lesson. Also Andersons "Like Water" movie will debut sometime in May or March in films through lions gate, so a Primetime may not really be necessary. Then again it may be considering the Paq and Mayweather fight happening in the same month.

The producers of Primetime recently said that the UFC plans to do about four per year. So with one already being done all three of these great match ups can't get their own primetime which i personally think they all deserve. So I ask which one fight should get it?

Why so easy?

Anderson Vs. Sonnen 2 will be historic when considering the amount of people there….Andersons movie coming out….and all the drama from their last fight…

if the UFC plays this right it can capture a big portion of the African American audience

especially since Jones-Evans is in Atlanta

I was thinking the same thing...

Two high quality Black fighters in UFC’s most competitive division
Fighting in Atlanta GA pretty much Americas highest % of blacks that are doing well.
Then a whole month between PPV’s

But then i realized with the latest press conference that they weren’t gonna hit the black market. They must be looking for it to come to them…

I realized this with the lack of Rashad or Jon being on any Rap/R&B radio stations while they were in Atlanta

Yeah, too early to do promotion rounds on local radio

I’d expect them to visit urban radio stations in mid to late march.

Idk Anderson went to LA and did one already

but i could have sworn they visited some radio stations while they were in Atlanta for the pre fight presser but hey maybe i’m wrong

Sonnen Silva 2 can sell great without the primetime so give it to rashad-jones or JDS-overeem to get them more buys

All of the above....

Rashad and Bones because of the rivalry and trash talk

JDS and the Reem because of the training

Silva vs Sonnen…. doesn’t need explanation

Hard to say

I mean, from one point of view, the shows that ‘need’ the Primetime specials are ones that don’t really sell the fight as much on their own.

TON of drama already building up to Jones-Evans, TONS of stuff building Silva-Sonnen 2….Dos Santos-Reem, not so much.

Dos Santos vs Reem would probably be helped the most…but I feel like Silva is overdue for a primetime special. Jones-Evans would be ‘money’ though…especially since you have the long gap from PPV to PPV between 144 and 145, nearly 2 months.

Yeah.

I can’t see that fight not being awesome from a fan perspective either-way.

I mean… You’re either looking at 25 minutes of Sonnen grinding away for the hardcores, or some ridiculously flashy Forrest-esque knock-out in the second round.

JDS Vs. Overeem, on the other hand, has a real potential of being all of 5 seconds long.

by Gugabe on Feb 20, 2012 3:37 AM EST up reply actions

Absolutely

I really like the Primetime shows and these are three awesome fights with great story lines.

by jim-ma on Feb 20, 2012 3:57 AM EST up reply actions

i agree

but let me add a question: I thought for all title fights there is a Prime time.. is this not this way? I thought that for the Jones-Evans and the JDS-Overeem fight its without question that there will be a primetime.
With all my respect if they would have made a Prime Time of Edgar and Bendo how many ppl would have cared? Yet maybe it would do both of them good…

Primetime shows...

only go with UFC’s PPV’s where a certain amount of business is already expected because they are so expensive to produce. That’s why almost every GSP fight gets the Primetime treatment, as opposed to guys like Frankie Edgar who could do with the rub. Otherwise they would do a lot more than 4 a year.

As for the poll, I went with UFC 145 just, cause there’s such an amazing story just waiting to be told. But I want one for UFC 147 as well, that would be legendary!

If I had to choose one, I pick JDS vs Reem.

Frankly, I think the UFC really dropped the ball when it came to building JDS up as the challenger for the belt. He was just suppose to lose to Cain, so that the UFC could get a piece of the lucrative Hispanic market. With the right promotion, Junior could be a huge star. He has an exciting style that casuals can enjoy, and he has personality that everyone can admire.

by Warbreezy on Feb 20, 2012 2:51 PM EST reply actions

I picked 147

but i really want to see Reem and JDS i think heavyweights esp Reem deserves the possibility of becoming a huge star in U.S.

by AfroSamurai on Feb 20, 2012 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

Also, I think They are already trying to make Jones the new face of the company.

If you watch fuel TV much, you see his face constantly. I don’t have a problem with that, but I think there are other stars in the UFC that deserve some of the spotlight. As good as Jones is, I think that the JDS vs Overeem has the potential to draw way more fans, if it was advertised properly. I just don’t want to see Junior wept under the rug for the second time.

by Warbreezy on Feb 20, 2012 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah but those heavyweights....

May just end up being a 70 second fight again

They may need to just go ahead and do Anderson since he has never really gotten much shine. I don’t mind the subtitles

I’m not resting until I’m officially Anderson Silva status.- Jon "Bones" Jones

by AfroSamurai on Feb 20, 2012 6:19 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that Anderson deserves some spotlight

But at the same time, I don’t want to watch 30 minutes of Sonnen’s WWE style promotion. It’s entertaining in small doses, but it gets annoying very quickly. Not to mention, Silva is in the Autumn of his career, and Junior is in his infancy, as far as heavyweights go. I would just rather they build up a star in JDS.

by Warbreezy on Feb 20, 2012 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

Thats the thing

Him being at the end and never receiving that GSP (Primetime every fight) treatment i think he should get one on possibly his retirement fight in his hometown with such a big year. Cover of UFC Undisputed 3…“Like Water finally in theatres” and fuck it’s his arch nemesis…

Gotta agree though i’d hate to hear Chael Sonnen’s WWE shit for 3 weeks or however long it’ll be

And gotta say that i just want the Reem to have one just to have one lol he may be at the tail of his career though now that i think about it.

It’s definitely a tough decision.

by Warbreezy on Feb 21, 2012 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

One of them definitely deserves it, it's just hard to say

The only real crime will be if none of them get a primetime show.

Jones I would say has evolved into a solid enough draw on his own, and his ‘grudge match’ with Evans should drive up additional buzz.

JDS is coming off of winning the most viewed live MMA fight ever…and Reem is coming off of starching Lesnar at the top of a card that had like 800K buys.

Anderson has never been a consistent draw…but against Sonnen, and against Sonnen a second time…I doubt they’d have much trouble getting buys for the event…

The Ufc hasn’t really seemed to get behind Jds though. It will be probably go to Jones/Evans because the Ufc seems to want him to be the face of the company. I really hope it doesn’t go to Sonnen/Silva because that pro wrestling b.s. would get old real fast.

This is just my opinion but,

I think the Jones/Evans fued already gets ton of attention. I guess the relationship between Rashad and Jackson, etc, could be explored in depth, but it seems like this fight is already getting a fair amount of attention.

by Warbreezy on Feb 20, 2012 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

Jon needs all the attention he can get right now IMO.

Jon has been averaging 400-475K ppv buys per fight since he got the title. If he can get that extra push to >500K buys and leave a good impression on viewers, should he win, he could blow up after this fight.

Anderson Silva doesn’t like to speak English, which wouldn’t make him an ideal candidate for a prime time. In addition to language issue, Silva also has a shorter shelf life at this point than Jon Jones. Silva only fights 2X a year and won’t be around for much longer, while Jones is capable of fighting 3-4 times a year if need be and is 12 years younger, making him someone the UFC should want to build up as much as they possibly can.

by amendamatrix on Feb 22, 2012 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

True about Jones esp with this being his last credible fight

but Anderson def needs one for the Brazilians too remember they are trying to do a stadium there.

i say Sonnen/ Silva

just because they have such different stories. primetime is about building a narrative around a fight. Jones/ Evans are both wrestlers. JDS/ Overeem are both foreigners, which is intriguing, but there’s no stark contrast there except for mma experience. Silva/ Sonnen are like day and night in style, past, and personality. plus there’s all the dramam from the last fight. only problem is you know UFC will gloss over the TRT thing. that’d be the best candidate in my opinion.

by lordrubbish on Feb 21, 2012 12:10 PM EST reply actions

Whenever Cruz v Faber happens

Let the audience know about the lighter fighters, show clips and have them talk about their experiences on TUF.

Both are well spoken fighters. There will guaranteed be heat between the two of them. Why not?

by Hart Thorson on Feb 21, 2012 1:24 PM EST reply actions

i like that

Faber has the potential to draw a lot more fans. Cruz is the least liked/ known champ in the ufc. it’ll be a crazy fight like the last one. plus there’s a rivalry going on.

Faber wins and BW gets a lot more interesting. on the other hand, if the UFC can get people interested in the fight and Cruz wins, people will start watching him to see him lose.

by lordrubbish on Feb 21, 2012 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

Has a TUF Season ever ended with a primetime?

Not being funny but really? I thought that was the purpose of TUF

I’m not resting until I’m officially Anderson Silva status.- Jon "Bones" Jones

by AfroSamurai on Feb 21, 2012 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

idk if it has happened

but i don’t see why not. TUF isn’t really focused on the coaches, except for their occassional back and forth and pranks and such. it’s more focused on the fighters. primetime would be more about their stories as coming up, seeing the alpha male fight team, Cruz’ team, their families etc…

by lordrubbish on Feb 21, 2012 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I don't think there has been one but now is a good time to start

especially with the new format of the show. It sounds like it wont be as heavy on the drama.

It would wrap it all up into a nice package and give extra weight to what I’m sure will be a great third fight.

by Hart Thorson on Feb 21, 2012 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

I don't see the nessecity in doing a primetime.

In the new format, the coaches will be having their training camp alongside the rookies in the house, so we will already have an in depth look at how they train for the fight. The prime time specials heavily focus on the final weeks of the training camp, so we will be seeing a lot of the same things we saw on TUF. It would be a waste of money to spend so much money on producing the series when people would already be exposed to the promotional push for the Faber-Cruz fight via TUF.

by amendamatrix on Feb 22, 2012 12:31 PM EST up reply actions

I suppose you are right. But with this being the first season of TUF

on FX do you think it will reach the casual fans as well as Spike did? Especially since Spike is doing alright in their counter programming?

by Hart Thorson on Feb 22, 2012 12:40 PM EST up reply actions

I think TUF on FX will do just fine. It's being promoted well.

Over the weekend, I went to the movies to see “Safe House” and saw an ad for the new TUF just before the trailers started. The theater was fully PACKED before that ad played, I would guess they are going all out to make sure people know TUF is moving to FX, plus people who normally would never tune into spike will see ads of it playing during highly rated shows like Justified, and Sons of Anarchy.

by amendamatrix on Feb 22, 2012 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

That's awesome!

Good marketing. Hopefully it pays off.
