Striking Instructionals - Taking Requests!
Hey folks, I'm beginning work on a pair of instructional books dedicated to striking - they will be in ebook format and contain photographs taken specifically for the ebooks, going into far greater detail than my breakdowns for HKL and on my blog. I will be selling them through my site and eventually through Amazon. Of course I'll try to keep the costs down - as a kid who spent every month's allowance on striking books and was routinely disappointed - I believe that knowledge shouldn't come at a premium.
The first will be a comprehensive guide to striking from angles because it's a topic that simply hasn't been explored in any depth even by the great boxing, kickboxing and MMA guides out there.
The second will be an homage to K. V. Gradapalov's "Tactics of the Foreign Masters". It will feature breakdowns of the key techniques and strategies of some of the biggest names in modern boxing, kickboxing and MMA. I will also be including my translation of the original Russian book which helped me so much, as an appendix.
The two things I would like to know are:
1) Is there any interest in these books?
2) For the second book - which fighters' striking are you especially interested in? I have lots of ideas but would really like to aim for the ones with the most interest.
As always, be honest, and now more than ever - be brutal =)

I enjoy your work, and as someone who’s read countless shitty striking books It’d be nice to read something good.
I like Nick Diaz, BJ Penn, Frankie Edgar, JDS striking.
Book on angles would be neat. I never really understood them until I saw Don Familton’s stuff and then one book I can’t remember the name of. Obviously I prefer vids, but if you’re selling it for money I doubt you’d be able to include gifs/vids from fights.
Good luck with it.
I would definitely be interested in something like this.
One caveat (and I’m not sure if you would have control over this) is that I’d really love it to be readable on the iphone.
Anyway, I’d love to see a breakdown of JDS’ boxing. I haven’t seen it talked about much, but it is obviously very effective.
Thanks for the encouragement lads! Now be a bit more demanding ;)
I really want to know which strikers interest you.
Ones which will be included without question are:
-Badr Hari
-Alistair Overeem
-Giorgio Petrosyan
-Roy Jones Jr
-Anderson Silva
-Lyoto Machida
But the rest are entirely up to you. Try and think of some guys with out there games
-Andy Hug?
-Rambaa Somdet?
-Jerome Le Banner?
- Nate / Nick Diaz?
hell even Krazy Horse!
If there is someone who is good on the feet and you want to know how they do it, drop their name and I’ll put in the research!

Old time boxers
Like Jack Johnson.
Also maybe Hoost, And some of the great Thai boxers like Samart or whoever.
I smoke on the mic like Smokin' Joe Frazier
Should be easy enough
I wrote my dissertation on Jack Johnson – I’ve probably watched his fights more times than his own family!
Impressive!
I really look forward to it. Your stuff on old-school boxing has been really excellent thus far, and confirmed my suspicion that the style of boxing they used to use back in the day of bare-knuckles or small gloves is more applicable to MMA than modern boxing.
Keep up the great work!

Where do you find fights...
of Jack Johnson? Google has failed me.
I got very interested in him and his fights after reading Unforgiveable Blackness, but couldn’t figure out where fight footage that old is archived.
Reppin' the 202 for The Voice's in Paul Harris' Head. BECW Season 12.
http://danieljamesmillerfoundation.wordpress.com/how-to-donate/
The only ones filmed were Ketchel, O'Brien, Burns, Jeffries and Flynn
Film was in it’s infancy and a massive syndicate of movie companies invested in making the films of the Jeffries fight, but when Johnson won most states banned fight film in one form or another.
The film of the Burns fight stops before he finishes Burns to save the white race’s face.
Should be able to find them on youtube. Unforgivable Blackness the film (also on youtube) has loads of fight footage. Dude was BRUTAL in the clinch, in an era where most people didn’t even know how to use the clinch.
Thanks.
I own the documentary, and have seen everything you mentioned. Wasn’t aware that those 5 fights are all there is though. Drat.

+1 for old time boxers and Thai guys
can we please add Yodsanklai Fairtex, Anuwat Kaewsamrit, John Wayne Parr, Buakaw Por. Pramuk, Mike Zambidis, Orono Por Muang Ubon, and Melvin Manhoef to this list?
these are a few of my favorite things in no order: BHO, WANDY, burritos, chili, HMK glass, USMTA, NYHC, Motorhead, turtles, frogs, rewatching Chael tap to Anderson, and Big Nog KOing Schaub.

Rob Kaman
Possibly the all-time greatest Dutch kickboxer (which, as Seanbaby so eloquently points out, is like being the greatest anything of anything of all time). Also would be cool to see more Thai fighters on there, maybe Buakaw or someone like that.
For better and for worse (to show their flaws)
Brock Lesnar
Diaz Bros
Frankie Edgar
Clay Guida
Dan Henderson
Rampage Jackson
Vitor Belfort (especially after he added karate)

Personally I'd prefer MMA striking
But that’s just me. I’m fascinated by how things change when you’re allowed to do anything. Machida and Silva are definites. And yes, I would probably buy both. What kind of price are you looking at?
I'd try to keep it low enough to cover costs and time.
The more interest we get, the lower I can keep the prices!
Everybody deserves to know the theory behind this stuff. God knows how much money I’ve wasted on vague books over my lifetime!
As for MMA striking – I will be steering clear of anything that involves covering up using the gloves, favouring movement instead – so it should all be quite applicable.
hey jack!
excited to see youre doing this!
how about a dual article-i was thinking ‘masters of the eye poke/nut shot,’ featuring the likes of koscheck, shields, cerrone, bruce leroy…

2. Emmanuel Augustus… just kidding. I don’t think I have anything to add to the list already there.
Good luck!

and the fifteen foot arm. That’s why he spent so much time backpedaling from Nate Quarry, eh? Just trying to get enough space to finally throw that punch?

Interested but depends on the final price (i'm a stingy bastard)
Would love to read about BJ Penn and GSP’s striking games
Doesn't matter really..
I’m sure it’ll be rock solid. You should do one on how to strike your way out of a wet paper bag so I can get something directly applicable out of it.

Instructionals? How about “Kicking for dummies?”
In all seriousness though, I’d buy a book you wrote if you broke down how to throw a Question Mark Kick. Or Brazilian Kick if you’re (profanity redacted).

1 inch punch
almost a parlor trick, really, but could make an enlightening contrast.
This is an oule.
by some schmuck in texas on Feb 21, 2012 2:46 PM EST reply actions
The funny thing about the 1- inch punch
is that it’s actually very, very easy. All you have to do is turn your fist outward, palm facing the sky, and then really turn over the punch and sit down on it hard. It doesn’t have to much impact, but the twisting motion of the fist acts like a drill and makes pushing the opponent back very simple.

by ElliotMatheny on Feb 21, 2012 3:27 PM EST up reply actions
as it was taught to me in taiji
it exploits not just the ‘sit down’ but also turning hips and throwing the shoulder forward. We did it as a palm strike starting with your palm down, so the ‘drill’ action wasn’t present in that version.
This is an oule.
by some schmuck in texas on Feb 21, 2012 3:36 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah, that's what I meant by sitting down on the punch
Hip and shoulder rotation, knee bend- all part of sitting down on your punches.

ok then

Really interesting post
I would love to see a section on striking-oriented fighters that have reputations as brawlers. The guy that comes to mind is Scott Smith, because no where in MMA history is there a fighter that has brought me so much fulfillment of the sport in his performances. He deserves some kind of recognition as an MMA icon/great, despite the limits of his technical abilities/torso’s gluttony
