UFC On Fox 3 Fight Card Shaping Up

Photo

UFC on Fox 3 is set for May 5th in East Rutherford, NJ, and the card looks to be complete. One big fight that had been tentatively set for the card, the third bout between Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin, is now off due to an injury. The card is still full of intriguing bouts either way though. The main event will see Nate Diaz and Jim Miller face off in a five-round bout that could decide the next UFC lightweight title challenger. In the co-main, Johny Hendricks will look to earn his own title shot with a win over solid veteran Josh Koscheck. The bout order for the rest of the card hasn't been announced yet, but here's how it looks right now:

May 5th, live on Fox from East Rutherford, NJ:

Nate Diaz (15-7) vs. Jim Miller (21-3)

Josh Koscheck (17-5) vs. Johny Hendricks (12-1)

Alan Belcher (17-6) vs. Rousimar Palhares (14-3)

Pat Barry (7-4) vs. Lavar Johnson (16-5)

SBN coverage of UFC on Fox 3

Tony Ferguson (13-2) vs. Dennis Hallman (51-14-2, 1 NC)

John Dodson (12-5) vs. Darren Uyenoyama (7-3)

John Hathaway (15-1) vs. Pascal Krauss (10-0)

Danny Castillo (13-4) vs. John Cholish (8-1)

Pablo Garza (11-2) vs. Dennis Bermudez (7-3)

Nick Denis (11-2) vs. Johnny Bedford (18-9-1)

Mike Massenzio (13-6) vs. Karlos Vemola (8-2)

Louis Gaudinot (5-2) vs. John Lineker (19-5)

I really doubt as we go that UFC on Fox main cards will start to resemble PPV less and less

that being said, these are four pretty good fights with some good names and everyone is coming off wins or a on a streak.

Now its not all about promoting one guy as a draw, but the UFC in itself. Which I think is a smart idea. Let the fans decide who they wanna follow and just set up fantastic fights. Leaves more room to grow then putting all your eggs in the Brock Lesnar/GSP basket.

by TheFilt on Feb 19, 2012 9:33 PM EST up reply actions

Here's the thing with Palhares

His Jiu-Jitsu is clearly not technical like Demian “Ernesto Hoost-level kickboxer” Maia. He fought a seasoned grappler like Jeremy Horn and didn’t finish him. Sure he slammed him 500 times but didn’t do enough to submit him.

I think on two occasions he had Dan Henderson in a leglock and finished neither. Henderson has excellent submission defense and has only tapped out to the Nogs and Anderson after he was rocked.

Then he had the Marquardt leglock and proceeded to get pounded out. And Marquardt has a very good ground game.

Dan Miller he didn’t really go for the submissions as much because he was winning the striking exchanges, but that still went the distance.

Palhares very much has trouble submitting high-level grapplers or anyone in the top 15. Dave Branch, Tomasz Drwal, and Lucio Linhares are all out of the UFC. Massenzio is an unranked MW. His career has mostly consisted of submitting guys who pose no threat to him and then stumbling against the very best of the division.

The title talk to me is a bit premature.

by SSreporters on Feb 19, 2012 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

its premature

But I think he really does have the potential to win the belt in a few years.

The Miller fight shouldn’t have went the distance. I swear I heard someone scream “STOP!” right before Palhares declared himself the winner.

I’ve rewatched the fight plenty of times. Miller never says stop, and is in the process of extending his arm up and kicking off with his legs (ie, still attempting to get out of the position, not quitting) when Palhares decides to stand up. He was in worse shape than that later in the fight and still responded immediately every time Herb threatened to stop it. Not to drop “I know this dude” evidence, but quite simply, there is zero chance in hell Dan would verbally submit to strikes in that fight, knowing a loss might mean his job and knowing how badly and why he needed to keep it to provide for his family. It just didn’t happen, and watching the video does nothing to change that because you can’t hear Dan saying anything at the time because he’s too busy worrying about the dude punching him in the head to have a chat.

Is it possible Dean said something that Palhares mistook for Miller saying stop, I suppose (though I and many others didn’t hear anything like it) but that doesn’t excuse Palhares, because a pro fighter really ought to be able to tell the difference between instructions from a ref to his opponent and his opponent verbally quitting, or make it any less lame that Bustamante said he was merely “too naive,” trying to dirty the reputation of an honest dude by saying he tricked Palhares to cover for his own fighter’s mistake.

FOX has a 2 hour Primetime window from 8-10 et. 2, three round fights + 1 five round fight easily fits that window and as we saw last time if all the fights go the distance plus filler it can go over.

I know what Dana said but I’m not buying it until I see it.

by bigdmmafan on Feb 19, 2012 10:06 PM EST up reply actions

Does it?

Usually, they seem to plan 30 mins for every 15 min bout and about 50 mins for a 5 rd. main event. Can’t see that fitting a 2 hr. format.

"A belt only covers two inches of your ****and the rest you need to back up on your own." Royce Gracie (allegedly...I just read it somewhere and thought it was cool for my sig!)

by KGNLuc on Feb 20, 2012 3:12 AM EST up reply actions

Well, they always prefer wiggle room

But the reality is that actual fight-time, a 3 round is maximum 17 minutes(3X5 + 1 minute between rounds 1-2 and 2-3) and a 5 round fight is a maximum of 29 minutes

plus fighter introductions tend to be ABOUT 1.5 minutes max I’d say.

So, say all 4 fights go to decision…that’s 17+17+17+29 = 1 hour 20 mins of ‘start-to-end’ fight time, leaving 40 minutes for commercials and ancillary stuff..that seems do-able to me.

But when you have 4 fights, one between two heavyweight heavy hitters, another between a pair of 185ers with very high finish rates…then I’d say the chances of all 4 fights going the distance are pretty slim.

If the ratings aren't good

Then they’ll know that they need to put “names” on the card. If not – and my suspicion is that they won’t be bad – then we can count on action fights like this one as the free card main events, with new fans to follow soon thereafter.

They just don't know.

They did good ratings with Heavyweights and Title Fight, but bad action because it was too quick. Then they gave us three rad co-main events to fill out a card but the action wasn’t there. Now they are trying fights that have to be awesome but with little name value. We’ll see how that and the August card do for ratings and hopefully by 2013, UFC and Fox will be close to dialing in what works for everybody.

I wonder how much name value is needed. I would think that as far as name value is concerned on a Fox card, they could have a name fighter on the main event. I just don’t see it being necessary to have all the other fights have names on those bouts. It would think a mixture of all the things you listed would be the right formula for a Fox card. With this card though, at least some people should be familiar with Koscheck and Diaz. In the future, I would like to see more Title fights, especially in the lighter weight classes, headline a Fox card.

hendicks got a KO, KOS boxed against peirce so it might mean that he will do the same, he aint dumb, he going in there with a gameplan, most likely LnP. he only trades with guys who he knows he can hang with, he is no different than GSP in terms of fighting against his opponents strengths.

speculation is all we got yo....

i dont see hendricks stopping kos’s power double, or getting off from underneath him. even GSP couldnt stop Kos, and he is the best in the biz.

Hendricks neutralized Fitch pretty well

By simply pressing the off switch on his brain.

he knew rumble and daley....

had cracking power and took them down over and over, that right hand is not his only choice, he is actually a very well rounded cerebral fighter, he knows how to exploit his opponents, except for GSP who happens to be notch up both mentally and physically.

im not even a Kos fan, its kinda funny to me the way ppl are writing him off, way worse than when he fought daley, its kinda surprising that ppl have so much faith in hendricks.

Motherfucker hits hard.

And his wrestling is at the very least on par with Koscheck’s, at this juncture.

Either way, I’ll pick him to wreck Kos.

I am like Hendricks more than Kos easily, but to me this fight is a 50/50. Hendricks has equal wrestliing on a pure wrestling stand point but in MMA I believe Kos is a ways ahead of him, but we will see.

Yeah, I may be getting ahead of myself.

Kos is a solid guy. But hopefully he gets KTFO’d.

I hope so too, but both have a lot of power in their striking (Hendricks probably has more) and neither are super technical striking (again Hendricks is probably more technical) and I give Kos the MMA wrestling advantage, to me it is as toss up

I agree...

12 seconds tells you nothing of a fighter’s abilities, much less a fighter against Jon Fitch. I highly doubt that KO would happen 9/10 times… but I’d wager some cash on Hendricks getting Fitched 9/10 times. For sure.

I think it's pretty obvious now that the UFC gives zero shits about you advancing far on TUF

Bermudez gets Pablo Garza, who is a very good fighter. Bedford will get crushed by Nick Denis.

Dodson vs. Uyenoyama is going to be a very competitive battle.

And to cite earlier examples they put Brookins on the Facebook show of a FUEL TV card behind guys like Walel Watson.

It’s good. Very good.

And i have changed my opinion on him, because previously was just a guy who looked horrible at times but i could see how much talent he s got. Tell me, what went wrong with his career? Or its that he is too nice /weird looking to be able to get promoted or gain a better position?
Walel was zero so i think they have still made the ground for Urijah upps . Dillashaw to proceed no?

For the life of me I don’t get why Belcher is considered a top fighter. On the same metric as Palharres’ record, only Ed Herman (a split decision) is still in the UFC of Belcher’s wins, and he also has losses to Akiyama, Day and Grove, none of whom are even top-25 level opposition. The only time he has fought a legit top middleweight he got dominated by Okami.

My mistake, I thought he was released again, recently. Probably a result of his injury having him on the sidelines so long. Still, the general point is that shy of his debut when he was worked (not that being dominated by Okami is necessarily a thing to be ashamed of or means somebody can’t now be a top fighter) he has never, in his wins or his losses, been thrown in against anybody that is anywhere near the top of the division, and instead has been matched with mid-to-lower UFC level middleweights. An 8-4 record in the UFC is never anything to be scoffed at, but Belcher seems like he often gets talked about as an elite guy, and somebody who is on the edges of the title picture and until he actually faces some ranked opposition I just don’t get degree of the hype.

I hate all of Vemola's fights except the Seth beatdown

He probably has the worst striking in the UFC. And I include Leonard Garcia. His wrestling isn’t that functional and when that isn’t working he resorts to open handed swim techniques he calls punches.

His issue is not weight classes, it’s lack of overall skill.

Meh

Not to impressed with the UFC offerings on FOX this could almost be an FX type card. They have 2 more after this right will be interesting to see where it goes from here. I still think they need some bigger names on these FOX cards to get the casual fans attention. With 3 rumored fights for UFC 146 it already looks so much better than this and I know the money is the PPV an blah blah but to me this is another waste of a FOX card strike 2.

I think it's a combination

Yes you need exciting fights but you also need names. Even if this a FOTY canidate I expect the lowest ratings for a FOX card yet. They wont be horrible but I’m not expecting better ratings than FOX 1 or FOX 2.

It is a combination why doesn’t the UFC understand that? It doesn’t seem that difficult but who knows must be a lot of things going on behind the scenes at FOX and the UFC but I just haven’t been to impressed.

Can they just realize that having a FULL, 4-5 fight main card on Fox is the way to go?

Enough of this ’It’s Fox, so fewer fights and more storytelling’ bullcrap.

The more fights you have, then there is more of a chance of a WAR or knockout that redeems potentially not-so-great fights.

If the 3 top fights go to uneventful decision, but you at least opened with an ‘epic KO’…the main card doesn’t seem as ‘bad’
