Happy Fifth Birthday Bloody Elbow
Here's my first ever post on BE:
Welcome to Bloody Elbow -- Let's Get it On![]()
by Kid Nate on Feb 15, 2007 3:23 PM CST in MMA News
My friends at SB Nation are justifiably proud of their network of sports blogs, but I've been harping on the glaring, gaping bloody hole in their coverage -- the fastest growing sport in the land, Mixed Martial Arts.
Well it's put up or shut up time because they have given me a blog.
It's an awesome responsibility to cover MMA for SB Nation and I'll do my best to not let down the sport or the warriors who participate in it.
I've been a rabid fan of mixed martial arts since I saw UFC 6 live on pay per view way back in the day.
I lost track a little bit around 2000-2001 -- the "dark ages" of the sport -- when you couldn't even see the events on PPV.
But I've been as obsessed as ever the last couple of years and want to invite everyone to join in the conversation.
The scoop blogging platform is the most powerful community blogging software in the world, I think fight fans will like it.
War MMA!
I brought Luke Thomas on later that month. I never could have imagined the course of history from there. Thanks everybody!

Man, I wish I could remember exactly when I came on board but it wasn’t too late into 2007. Fuck…it’s been a long time.

yeah it does

You've put together a great resource here
I spent 5 years putting up with Sherdog’s hit and miss content before I found BE.
The Judo Chops alone inspired me to become a writer, the sheer range of fan content is brilliant.
Happy Birthday BE from a noobie.
Yeah, they do a great job of rounding up pertinent news, and doing good analysis & editorials here.
The discussion is also so, so much better than Sherdog (I started there as well)

Yeah, they're pretty damn bad.
The best discussion you can ever get is on the niche sub- forums, like the grappling forum. And conversations are so hard to track on SD compared to SBN.

Hm? Best discussion you can get anywhere on grappling is over on InStrength.
Or the old MMA.tv forums if you can get the black belts roused enough to pay attention. Silverback (Karel Pravec) is one of those.

InStrength dot com.
I do like InStrength.
I meant the best discussion you could get on Sherdog was in the sub- forums like Grappling.

great job nate
this site and the community has really helped me get into the sport. you sure aren’t going to get it from the more mainstream sports outlets.
I wouldn't be half the fan I am today
Without the news, editorials, other articles, and general community that BE provides. I’m sure a lot of us can say the same. Thanks.

Wow, has it been that long already?
My join date says May 16 2008, but I think that was when BE switched over to the current sports blog format. I checked my email, and it turns out I joined April 20, 2008. WTF. I have wasted my life. Haha. So which of you old bastards are still around?

"You've got Floyd Mayweather making $25 million. He can't stop a double-leg..." Nick Diaz.
Yeah most of us got switched over in May 08. I think I was around in late 07, but I don’t know when exactly.

You know, I don’t even remember how I found BE. My guess is I came across it in one of my many searches for MMA content.

I'm here by way of Cage Potato.
They linked to an article on here and it was like a breath of fresh air. No trolls, intelligent conversation, and all the gif and pic posting ability that I could abuse.

Yeah, the comment section was always really good. I remember back when an article would go up and you would be one of the first few people to post. Now, you come here and the comment sections has usually exploded before you even get to finish the article, haha. Still very good here though, beyond the occasional runaway thread.

And my MMA life has never been the same since. The only other websites I check now are Fightmetric and Sherdog exclusively for the Fight Finder. Everything else is dead to me.

Happy Birthday to the #1 mma site on the fuking internetz!
I went back once to read the very first post. It’s amazing how much this site has grown since then.
Nick Denis is me.
Huge mutherfuking fan of Jon Fitch and Jon Jones.
I’ve been around here for little more than a year, exactly since Dec 03, 2010, and can say that coming to this place has been very amusing, educational, angering, confusing, insulting, and downright incomprehensible, which is why I’m still here.
I still remember having started in Junkie, and then roaming around a lil’ bit the UG and Five Ounces of Pain, and pretty much swearing Sherdog off forever at first sight. I’ve been a fan of MMA for almost 5 years, and I spent 4 of them having to wear an e-hazard suit just so I could find decent conversation.
Thanks for opening this place Nate.

Happy Birthday!
I don’t remember how I found BE at first, but one of the first articles I read was some sort of bet and the loser had to drink a bottle of maple syrup.
I don’t remember who it was, but I do remember thinking “I’m not staying here if this is the sort of content that they put up”.
Glad I stuck with it. BE helped turn me from a casual into a hardcore ufc fan, and now an all round mma fanatic.
I’m still a super lurker but I read BE at least 3 or 4 times a day now.
Thanks to all the writers who have put in the time and effort to make BE what it is today.
My brother told me about BE
I joined August 14th, 2010

In the tradition of Kid Nate, in the tradition of Luke Thomas of the D.C. nubs, of Canon Jacques., of Brent Brookhouse, the man who will never die. As the real Nature Boy Richard Wade, upstairs tonight. From the Chris Nelsons, to the Mike Romes, to the…Mike Fagans, I accept this heavyweight title.… Wait a second, I’m Jonathan Snowden. I’m the fat man himself, Tim Burke. This is it tonight, Dad. God, that’s beautiful. And Anton Tabuena, and they can all kiss my ass. Because I am not the man who accepts a torch to be handed down to me from an organization that died…RIP…seven years ago. Cabbage, Matt Roth, is the man who ignites the new flame of the sport of professional wrestling. Tonight, before God and my father is witness, I declare myself, The Roth, as the new Bloody Elbow lead writer! We have set out to change the face of MMA blogging. So tonight, let the new era begin: the era of the sport of professional wrestling, the era of Cabbage, the era of the BElitest.

I study sociology and was brought here from a soc blog
It was about how the bonus structure was incentivizing fighter behavior. I was also reading about one of the Sociology PhD grad student’s research here and looking for related stuff and found some more BE stuff. I have been infatuated ever since, although keeping up with MUTHERFUKERS is hard goddamned work.

I used to watch ufc and wouldnt think twice about putting my fatass into a god awful affliction shirt when I started lurking in 2008-2009? this site has turned me into the BROCKLE SNAR of mma, im still relatively new, but im learning more and more everyday, but I still don’t like getting punched in the face, at all. I’ve been lurking around BE since late ‘08/early ’09, and just recently decided to finally get a user name so I could comment around here. The comment sections are definitely better than every other site I’ve seen, but the combat sports coverage that your staff produces is the best out there. This is definitely my one-stop place for MMA coverage. Keep up the great work!
