Video: CM Punk, Rener Gracie Break Down Royce Gracie Vs. Dan Severn
For those that listened to Ariel Helwani's recent interview with WWE Champion CM Punk, you learned that he knows his MMA and is also a white belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, training when his schedule allows it.
As a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu student, Punk (Phil Brooks) did a session with Rener Gracie recently, filming a video for the Gracie Breakdown YouTube channel where they explain the setup of the triangle choke in the Royce Gracie vs. Dan Severn battle from UFC 4.
In the seven minute clip, Punk plays the role of Gracie while Gracie acts as Severn, going through the motions of how to defend against the choke and explaining what Severn did wrong in getting caught. For those unfamiliar, Rener is the son of Rorion and the grandson of Helio.
Punk made himself known to the MMA world when he was reportedly set to walk out with Chael Sonnen for his UFC On Fox 2 bout against Michael Bisping. That didn't happen for a variety of reasons which he addresses in the Helwani interview.
Watch the whole clip after the jump.

Are they going to do a Gracie Breakdown for Art Jimmerson tapping to Royce too? I understand why they do these videos for recent fights, but this seems kinda pointless
StevenGiles is a huge MMA fan and also happens to be the best person in the world. He is also hugely pretentious and loves to have sigs that make a lame effort at exaggerating his own importance
publicity
they breakdown classic (read Royce) fights to pump up the academy and to have fun

Gonna have to scope the vid when I'm not at work.
But he has a move called the “Anaconda Vice”. Is that a legit submission or is that a wrasslin move? Every time I see him do it, it looks easy to get out of.
and yes I know it’s fake, STFU

Its a neck crank. You can choke someone with it, but it is more of a neck crank. I’ve done it to someone. Also, the Koji Clutch is real too.
I’ve pulled it off while rolling too. Was looking for an arm triangle but when i couldn’t get it, i tried the anaconda vise out just for fun. Was pretty surprised that it worked. Haha

Based off of Pillow V-Armlocks from Kesagatame
Judo and Catch use it. Judo calls the positon Kesa Gatame, BJJ tends to call it Scarf Hold, Catch calls it Head & Arm hold / position.
Here’s a Catch lockflow with options off the Head&Arm (click for youtube)

Their drummer is fantastic. My favorite part of that band.

Which band?
Coz the RATM drummer is fairly average.

I totally disagree.
I think Brad Vwilk (or whatever his last name is) is easily the best part of that band.

Not a white belt?
I see he’s wearing a white belt in the vid, but is there a second source on CM Punk saying he is a white belt? I won’t take the time to go back to watch the Helwani video right now, but I remember him saying that he travels a lot so he’s always dropping in at other schools where he “throws on a white belt” (something that a lot of people do when visiting other schools). Presumably he also does it because he doesn’t want to have other guys testing themselves against him. A guy that athletic, training even for a couple of years should easily have a blue.
Whoops. Any way to delete this?
I had a technical problem and thought that it hadn’t been posted, so I re-wrote it below.
Not a white belt?
Does anyone know what belt he actually has? Based on his interview with Helwani I got the impression that he isn’t a white belt. He said “I always show up and throw the white belt on, because I’m new at that place”. Plus for a guy that athletic it wouldn’t take more than a couple of years to get a his blue and it seems he’s been training for a while: “It’s something I’ve always done”.
