Training Progress
Hey everyone! I just wanted to update BE on how my training is going. I have been working on my striking five days a week and wrestling two days a week, although that is just to tune things up, although from an MMA stance, sprawling is a bit different, but I still have my double leg.
The first week or so my hands were awful, although it was mostly my hip rotation that was the problem with it. The coordination and flexibility problems from cerebral palsy have made moving on the balls of my feet for all of my right handed strikes and muay thai kicks a little tough but I am starting to get the hang of it.
My jab is getting to its full extension and my cross is getting better as well, and tonight I finally am getting the hang of sitting back on my rear leg and not leaning forward during my strikes. My Muay Thai kru has me focusing on a lead leg defensive style with a lot of jab kicks to try and compensate for the CP on the right side of my body.
I will update you all next week with more, as I start gi BJJ on Wednesday! I am super amped as I am good with movement on the ground but lost as far as submission defense and offense are concerned. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask and I will be happy to answer them!

I have a question given that you brought up CP.
How does it affect the drills and routines you have to engage in, and how do your instructors work around it?

Yeah
I started wrestling when I was 12 and did it all through high school, and I finished my career with two years at the JUCO level. I ended up being one of those guys who wrestled year round, doing folkstyle/collegiate wrestling from october until march and then freestyle and greco roman in the summer. It helps but there are a lot of muscle memory based habits that I have to get out of my system as well, the wide stance, weight forward, going to my belly if I get taken down, things like that.

Ahh, that’s interesting. Do you guys ever mix the striking and wrestling/grappling together?
I'd rather be trollin'.
Yeah
Every friday wrestling transitions. Setting up takedowns with striking and striking with takedowns

I never did wrestling or anything, but I always felt a lot more comfortable going in for a takedown when I could set it up with striking, just because the other guy didn’t know what was coming. Whenever we do wrestling, I feel completely out of my depth. How well do you feel like you’ve transferred your wrestling to mma?
I ask because, for example, Rashad vs Davis was very interesting to me. Davis was a better wrestler on paper, right? But Rashad looked dominant in the wrestling. So I’m just wondering if you had any insight on that.
I'd rather be trollin'.
Yeah a good double off of a jab is a lot easier
to set up than a single leg, although my go to single (low single) only really works in MMA on people named James Toney. So I will definitely be using my striking to set up my double legs if I can. BJJ tonight BABY!!!

A bit of a personal question here, but how old are you Anderson?
And are you training full time?

Awesome stuff
I’m not an expert by any means, but I do have a little bit of advice.
Don’t think of bjj as a separate art from wrestling, view it as a different style of wrestling. Just like there is folkstyle, freestyle and greco-roman, think of bjj as just submission wrestling.
The reason I say this is that there are a bunch of fighters who have adapted their wrestling game and have blended submissions with wrestling beautifully. Fabio Prado seems to be a great coach in this regard. Look at Team Alpha Male. Urijah Faber and Joseph Benavidez are both guys who can attack with submissions and blend them in with their wrestling. They can transition from a front headlock choke to a guillotine choke and such. After they take a guy down and start pounding them out they can catch a submission like a head and arm choke (seems to be a favorite of wrestlers) or a rear naked choke if someone takes their back. They’re not going for triangles or armbars, they are going for submissions that they feel comfortable with when their wrestling backgrounds are considered.
Historically Matt Hughes has been awesome at this. We remember him for his wrestling and ground and pound, but his ability to finish by submission opens up opportunities. Watching Hughes in his prime is a good example of a guy who could reverse submission attempts and actually tap out guys out. Countering GSP’s kimura with a sick armbar is a good example. The fight where he slept Almeida was pretty impressive as well.
Jon Jones is another guy who has similar versatility. When C.B. Dollaway isn’t getting knocked out, he is a pretty good example as well.

But if you think I'm full of shit
Don’t hesitate to ignore this and go about your merry way.

Yeah
This style is what I plan on doing, I don’t expect my stand up to be on par with experienced kickboxers and the like but if I can get a good submission game, both offensively and defensively I can be deadly on the ground. Also knees. I like using my knees.

Fine advice. Just think of it as adding things to your wrestling.

My buddy has CP, and so I showed him how to use his dominant side.
He pins his non- dominant arm to his face, and just does work with his jab & lead hook.
There's no moral order at all. There's just this: can my violence conquer yours?
Big props
Lots of respect for your attitude, man. Hope to see you in a big show one day.
