Dustin Poirier Vs. Chan Sung Jung Set For UFC On FX 3 Main Event

Dustin Poirier submits Max Holloway - Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images

Two of the UFC's most entertaining featherweights have engaged in a bit of mild trash talking on Twitter in the last few days and it appears that they'll now get to settle their dispute in the Octagon, as UFC.com announced that Dustin Poirier vs. Chan Sung Jung will serve as the main event for UFC on Fuel 3 in Virginia on May 15th:

"The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung takes on Dustin "The Diamond" Poirier in a three-round main event, set for May 15th in Fairfax, VA.

Jung, "The Korean Zombie" has quickly become a fan-favorite with an impressive highlight reel, including his legendary brawl with Leonard Garcia, the first ever Twister submission in the UFC, and his shocking 7-second knockout of heavy favorite, Mark Hominick, back in December. Although he's 3-3 in his last six fights, the Zombie's popularity and propensity for ending fights in exciting fashion could propel him to a title shot with a win over the equally fast-rising Poirier.

It wasn't too long ago that Louisiana's Dustin Poirier was a heavy underdog to Josh Grispi, who had first been penciled in for a title shot against Jose Aldo, before an injury paved the way for Poirier to step in as a replacement. Poirier, who had previous flown under the radar in the WEC, sure didn't look like an underdog as he thrashed Grispi for three rounds, marking the start of a undefeated run in his first four UFC fights. Now hot on the heels of two impressive submission wins over Pablo Garza and Max Holloway, Poirier could see himself leap-frog the injured Erik Koch, who he was expected to fight for #1 contender status, and instead turn the fight with Jung into a bout that will determine Jose Aldo's next challenger.

Chan Sung Jung "The Korean Zombie" (12-3)
W Mark Hominick (TKO) - UFC 140
W Leonard Garcia (submission) - UFN 24
L George Roop (KO) - WEC 51
Dustin "Diamond" Poirier (12-1)
W Max Holloway (submission) - UFC 143
W Pablo Garza (submission) - UFC on Fox 1
W Jason Young (unam. decision) - UFC 131

UPDATE: The UFC has apparently decided to switch the broadcast plans for this event from FX to Fuel, so it will now be the third UFC on Fuel show.

The card for UFC on Fuel 3 now includes:

-Dustin Poirier vs. Chan Sung Jung
-Thiago Silva vs. Igor Pokrajac
-Donald Cerrone vs. Yves Edwards
-Jason MacDonald vs. Tom Lawlor

I can watch it for free

On UFC.tv, so that’s not got anything to do with it.

I am talking about putting underexposed prospects & contenders on the platform that as many people as possible have access to. It’s bad enough that Ellenberger vs Sanchez is on Fuel but in that case Sanchez is a pretty big name and his inclusion on the card is probably due to the UFC thinking he can lure more subscribers to Fuel. I don’t see Dustin Poirier convincing very many people to make an extra effort to get Fuel – hardcores probably already found a way to get Fuel and casuals don’t know him.

In principle

I agree completely. What seems to be fairly clear from the Fox deal so far, however, is that the names on the cards aren’t driving viewership. Does a casual fan know the difference between Jake Ellenberger and Josh Koscheck? Maybe, but I wouldn’t bet my life on it.

Based on what?

We’ve had one (and a half) Fox card(s) and one FX card.

In any case my main point was the one about building Poirier/KZ and the featherweights into potential PPV draws. Placing what is presumably a #1 contender bout on a channel where nobody will see them just means that no one will clamour for an Aldo vs Poirier/KZ title fight.

Let's try this again

I wasn’t trying to contradict your point, just build on it a little bit. The fights that have been put on free TV since the start of the Fox deal have given great exposure to the guys the UFC is trying to build into PPV draws – that’s where I agree with you. The point I was trying to make is that the UFC doesn’t need to worry so much about name recognition in terms of the fights they put on free TV; based on our admittedly small sample size, people will watch regardless. As you pointed out, though, putting those fights on Fuel (which doesn’t have the reach among casuals that FX or Fox does) is defeating the purpose.

by Patrick Wyman on Feb 10, 2012 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry if my reply came off as defensive, that wasn’t my intention. I think there’s a big difference between Fox cards and Fuel cards; the most relevant part of it being the fact that everybody’s got Fox, nobody’s got Fuel. It’s not going to take a lot to get people to watch free MMA but it takes a whole lot to get people to switch from Comcast to DirecTV. Putting on fights that are both a) relevant and b) featuring big names (eg. Sanchez vs Ellenberger) is probably a necessary evil because it increases the number of Fuel subscribers.

I think everyone (apart from Chris) can agree that Poirier vs KZ on Fuel is a terrible idea.

Not at all

Good points. If I had to put myself in the UFC’s shoes, I’d follow exactly your line of reasoning for the first Fuel card, with the hope that by the time Gustafsson-Lil Nog and Poirier-KZ come around the number of subscribers will have jumped. For those of us with access, Fuel is pretty awesome, but I can’t imagine that people would actually switch cable providers just to get one channel.

Perfect matchmaking

KZ has a bit of name value already and both fighters are constantly in exciting fights. What with the Cruz/Faber TUF season and the FLW tourney also on FX, it sure looks like the UFC is making a concerted effort to really market the lower weight classes on free TV.

I love both of these guys. Should be a war, especially on the ground. Side note – Aldo doesn’t have a fight booked, and presumably this is a number one contender match; the LW title eliminator isn’t for a few months, either. Is there a better time to do Aldo vs. Edgar, either at 145 (if Frankie loses to Bendo) or a 150 pound catchweight?

This fight is very interesting. On the feet, I think that Poirier is the more technical striker, but KZ has a great chin, and we don’t know how the fight could turn out if it becomes more of a brawl. On the ground, Poirier has shown some very good ground skills as of late, but KZ is not bad on the ground either.
