Ronda Rousey is not smart just because she knows how to sell a fight
I was listening to a radio interview with Ronda, and she said this about herself:

Ever since Ronda blew up in the online mma community I've heard this same thought expressed regularly, which is how smart Ronda is because she knows how to market herself and get people interested in her fights etc.
I'm a huge Ronda fan, but this is a pretty silly thing to say. Two things:
1) Knowing that talking shit gets you attention does not mean you're smart. Even babies understand how to get attention. Children will throw fits and break shit if they want more attention. It's something everyone knows. Being aware of this and acting on it doesn't mean you're smart.
2) When women talk shit to each other on real housewives of jersey shore or whatever reality tv show, we look and call them attention whores and drama queens. When people do it in mma, we call them smart?
This isn't an intelligence issue, it's just Ronda being more willing to be polarizing than the other woman.
One thing I do like about Ronda is that she actually thinks about her answers and comes up with her own opinions, detached from group think. That at least suggests she's smart and it certainly makes her interesting.

Check out the big brains on Ronda.

I'd say she was smart for hyping herself to a title shot.
Financially and career wise this is an excellent decision, but I don’t think that is where the disagreement is.
I believe the most important reason people buy into her talking and people are listening to her talk is because she is an exciting fighter that finishes opponents in an impressive fashion and comes from a decorated background (as well as being a very pretty woman).
Her talking shit is allowed in my opinion as she has the means to back up her trash talk. If she was a scrub who lost her past 2 fights she would be getting no attention when she is talking shit. I see it as an intelligent move to hype yourself to the media and fans when you have an impressive record as she does; people will listen, she will get the big fights she has hyped, and her career and wallet will thank her.
It is understandable why other WMMA fighters are disappointed with her fast rise, but if they were putting people away within the first minute of every fight they fought it would be intelligent for them to talk shit and ride the fast rise to stardom. Ultimately I think they’re all just jealous.

On top of that.
2) When women talk shit to each other on real housewives of jersey shore or whatever reality tv show, we look and call them attention whores and drama queens.
Being judged and called “whore and drama queen” by a bunch of people you will never meet in your life while you make millions of dollars is pretty intelligent IMO. What isn’t intelligent is supporting people you think are “whores and drama queens” by watching their television show.

Neither of those things really have anything to do with intelligence. Success ≠ smart, and smart ≠ success. Not that there’s anything wrong with cashing in on your stupidity (let’s by honest, that’s why half the people watch Jersey Shore), just saying. Taking money someone gives you doesn’t make you intelligent.
I'd rather be trollin'.
Taking money someone gives you doesn’t make you intelligent
If the other option is “NotTaking money someone gives you”, then yes I would say that taking the money would be intelligent. this doesn’t mean that you are instantly intelligent, but you made the intelligent choice. And intelligent choices are what determines one’s intelligence. If you don’t think that acquiring money is intelligent then you don’t seem to understand that money is the medium of resources. With money you and your children will be able to live comfortable lives, and ultimately that is an intelligent move. You will be able to win the evolutionary game of passing on your genes and so will your children most likely as they will inherit the wealth, and if they make intelligent decisions as you have, then their children will be well off as well.
If you are intelligent and unsuccessful you are either using your intelligence incorrectly or you are not in fact intelligent. So many kids complain that they got straight A’s in highschool, but are now waiters, when they didn’t attempt to further their education by going to college which would lead to them getting a better job then waiter. They made an unintelligent decision.
Thats not to say the members of the jersey shore are on par with albert einstein. they are just taking advantage of opportunities presented to them in an intelligent manner. They made the intelligent choice to go on television, do little to no work, and made millions of dollars in the process.
Intelligence, noun. “Capacity for learning, reasoning, understanding, and similar forms of mental activity; aptitude in grasping truths, relationships, facts, meanings, etc.” They don’t have that.
Like I said, taking money to be on TV doesn’t make you intelligent. It doesn’t take intelligence to realize “Hey, these guys wanna pay me to party. I should take that money.” Honestly, intelligence would probably be detrimental to their cause. The stupid shit they say is part of why people tune in. Making one intelligent decision doesn’t make you intelligent. That’s fine, but let’s not get mixed up there.
I'd rather be trollin'.
I'll agree.
But intelligence and stupidity are also opinion based and vary from who you ask. You may think the people on jersey Shore are idiots because they are 30 and partying like they’re 20, but they are making more money then you and me combined. We could get into a philosophical debate behind the definition of intelligence and what it means to be intelligent, but I’ll agree with you, most people on television aren’t smart or intelligent, but they have made the smarter choices (in hindsight) then you and me in their lives to get where they are, whether it be by dumb luck (this 99% of the time) or intention (read: I should have moved to south jersey and started GTLing 3 years ago if I was making smart choices in this current cultural environment).
She is smart
She has no delusions about the business of MMA that other females in the sport have. Listen to any of her interviews. She knows that the future of WMMA is very much in doubt, and knows she needs to create interest if she wants to keep her job. He doesn’t have this over idealized view of WMMA like Tate, she spits the real on a regular basis. She is also very good, so she was able to become the talking point of WMMA almost overnight.

She is probably at an average IQ
But she has managed herself far more intelligently than some other WMMA stars.

She needs to tone it down a bit, or risk alienating a lot of the fans.

A lot? I doubt it.
If only for the single reason that the average sports fans barely, if even, recognizes athletes as people. So long as they deliver, entertain, and not do anything out-rightly heinous or “dishonorable” in their eyes, they’ll be fine—Rousey won’t be the exception.

I personally feel that she needs to keep doing what she’s doing. She’s pretty much the only polarizing figure in Womens MMA right now especially with Carano and Cyborg pretty much gone. She brings interest to herself, but also to Womens MMA.
Check out the C&D Channel on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/user/Gobusiness123 for MMA reviews, predictions, analysis, and other MMA related content.
She is trying to create a buzz for womens mma not just for herself.
To do this she has to talk more and put her opinions out there more. The more success she has in the long run (in the cage and the media) will translate to womens mma being more popular and the pay scale for ALL women involved will go up. She credits Gina for showing that women can make a living at it, and now she is trying to broaden those opportunities and make it possible for more women to make that same living. Not long ago men faced the same struggle unless they were on a poster for a UFC event.

Go Ronda.

"I actually held public office and I left the only way a politician should, in handcuffs" - Chael Sonnen
"but if there's anyone who wants to finish fights it's me." - GSP
Ronda makes those connections though far better than most fighters male or female
She makes the connection between being polarizing, being marketable, and being fast-tracked. Damn right she’s smart.
And what’s more she’s helped lift WMMA in general somewhat along with it just before it would critically need that boost with Cyborg getting popped for steroid, so I’m legit grateful for her. Megumi Fujii is still my all time favorite female fighter but Rousey is awesome and deserves all the praise she gets.
