THQ, makers of the UFC Undisputed 3 video game, have fun a handy simulation of the UFC 143 headliner: Nick Diaz vs. Carlos Condit for the interim UFC welterweight title.
After 25 bouts here are some stats:
-- Diaz won by technical knockout with strikes to the body once
-- Diaz defended 40 percent of Condit's takedown attempts
-- Condit won by technical knockout with strikes to the leg once
-- Diaz and Condit threw a combined total of 6,675 punches
-- Condit shot for a takedown within the first round in all matches
-- Diaz won by submission in seven matches

i do not see this fight ending in a sub

It's very possible
Diaz can use strikes to set up subs. Also Condit’s been submitted a few times.

the last time condit lost by submission was in 2006 to pat healy
comparing him back then to the fighter he is now is irrelevant at best.

Just felt it was completely unnecessary at best

I like how Diaz sets up the triangle choke, Condit taps
And Herb Dean is nowhere to be found. They seem to be self-officiating.

Refs in video games are brutal
when you ko someone you’re allowed to follow up with strikes for like 4 seconds and the ref just stands there before stopping you.
You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Yeah that's the new "finish the fight" feature
Where you don’t have to awkwardly stand over a KO’d opponent.
Refs in Undisputed are terrible on subs. They gently pull people off.

How accurate are these simulations
I know THQ and various people have been running 25, 50, 100 simulations of the big fights for some time now. Has anyone compiled a historical record of how accurately a set of simulations in Undisputed has forecasted the actual fight result?
For me they are not accurate.
As accurate as the simulations may be in theory of the skill sets, they cannot factor in the human element of fighting. Mental toughness is more important then the physical assets needed to fight. Those elements are not factored in, like Forrest mentally breaking against Anderson. I think I am making sense no?
You're spot on about it only being a simulation
and not being able to take into account every factor big or small.
But regardless of that inconsistency, which is inherent in any simulation to varying degrees, I just really want to know how accurately the simulation result matches with the actual result. Because, even if it doesnt factor in every nuance, if they are even 66% correct, thats huge.
I think since they started doing these videos they've been right about the winner most of the time.
I’m not sure though and I don’t think you should rely on them inanyway to pick the winner of a fight but they’rekind of fun.

Considering that there is no way that they can predict the complete fighter that any two men are, and that at best it is a coin flip… I don’t think you there is even a ‘not sure’ in the fact that you shouldn’t consider them anything more than a advertisement for the the game and the UFC both.

I meant I wasn't sure that they've been right all the time.
Not that that I wasn’t sure that you should base your picks on them. You absolutely shouldn’t.

Whether or not the simulation factors in every nuance isn’t important to the question in this case. If the simulation is right the majority of the time (and so far its 100% for the winner after simulating 5 different fights with 25 sims per fight), whether or not it factors in certain intangibles doesn’t matter, statistically speaking.
Very
I went back and checked and if my lunchtime research is right they’ve done 5 of these:
UFC 141 — Overeem v Lesnar
UFC 142 — Aldo v Mendes
UFC on Fox 2 — Evans v Davis
UFC on Fox 2 — Sonnen v Bisping
… and now this one.
It’s been 100% correct in both fighter and method (leaving out “time” but keeping in round) twice and predicted the correct fighter and method but not the correct round twice:
UFC 141
prediction, Overeem KO rd 1
actual, Overeem TKO rd 1
UFC 142
prediction, Aldo TKO rd 4
actual, Aldo KO rd 1
UFC on Fox 2
prediction, Evans KO rd 3
actual, Evans UD
UFC on Fox 2
prediction, Sonnen UD
actual, Sonnen UD
That’s a pretty good track record so far, I’d say.

They also did Cain vs JDS and had Cain winning via knockout

Yea you know I was only looking at the THQ youtube site but then went back and saw a few more on UFC’s channel. So I think you mean this…
They did a few for the Liddel v Franklin fight too (4 scenarios I think). It doesn’t have the prediction listing at the end or the stats like these other ones so I’m not counting it. I DID however miss one that has the prediction stats…
They did one for UFC 140 Jones v Machida
prediction, Jones KO rd 4
actual, Jones Sub rd 2
I missed one...
UFC 140 Jones v Machida
prediction, Jones KO rd 4
actual, Jones Sub rd 2
So in this one they got the correct fighter only. As far as I know this video was the first time they had the detailed stats about how many times a fighter was rocked or how many times one fighter was subbed in the 25 simulated fights. Are there any more?
If not that brings us to…
140 Fighter Only
141 Fighter, Method & Round
142 Fighter & Method
Fox2 Fighter Only
Fox2 Fighter, Method & Round (technically… cause it was a UD)
If we go by
Fighter, Method & Round = 100%
Fighter & Method = 66%
Fighter = 33%
Then we get:
(33 + 100 + 66 + 33 + 100) / 5 = 66
So the odds are that it’ll get the “Fighter & Method” correct
Bottom line is, though… from UFC 140 on (5 predictions) it’s gotten all the fighter’s correct. Interesting
Those punches aren’t loopy enough to be Nick Diaz. They did pretty well mimicking a fighters movements from what I’ve seen in the demo, but they missed the mark for Nick
Nick can throw straights with the best of em.

I am so torn with this fight.
But, I’ve learned to never bet against Diaz so I’ve got $1,000 in fake money on him.
…G.S.P. might be another discussion.
questions about condit
how is his ground game?
I really find these fight simulations especially if THQ produced them, mountain dewey and retarded.
Diaz has high volume output, but Condit has good counters and great killer instinct.
On the ground, i dont know how Condit is at this stage of his career, I have a feeling he is going to surprise people if they end up somehow on the ground.
Id like Diaz to win, but since Condit stomped hardy he really has been on a tear, and I think his determination is going to get the better of his foe.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. I think the Cerrone Diaz fight is foreshadowing for this one. A very impressive technically proficient muay thai fighter out of jacksons getting pressured and pulled out of their game by a Diaz brother. Condit is fantastic, but I can’t help but think his striking wont look half as impressive when he’s across the ring from Diaz.

Condits jiu jitsu is good. He’s got plenty of sub wins. Wiki gives him 13 sub 13KO. I’ve seen him catch subs from his back, so his sub wins are not just hurting someone and getting a RNC. Was not aware he was a purple belt. If that’s the case, a black belt from his instructor would really mean something.
I’m surprised that you think Condit will win due to his determination. Not that he doesn’t have plenty of heart, but I can’t imagine anyone winning against Diaz by being more determined. That’s what makes this such a great fight. Both guys have tons of heart and come to fight every time. The attribute ‘Iron will’ is a push in this case, and skills and athleticism will decide the contest.
I consider myself a softcore fan.
As far as straight picks, their videos haven’t been wrong yet. I’m gonna go with diaz.
