Will Dana White cut Overeem if he's found guilty?

Dana White cut former UFC fighter Maiquel Falcao due to backlash over the legal troubles Falcao faced due to his part in the assault on a female in a Brazilian nightclub. Falcao was a promising prospect for the promotion who is notorious for sharing a bizarre fight with Gerald "The Hurricane" Harris in which the latter fighter was cut (I argue unjustly) after their lackluster performance.

Given that Alistair Overeem is currently facing a battery charge for allegedly shoving a woman's face and causing her to stagger back, I'm curious if White will actually display some manner of consistency when dealing with Overeem and cut him as well.

When Roger Huerta's epic street fight when viral Dana White said the following regarding men who put their hands on women: "In no way do I condone street fighting, but when a guy puts his hands on a woman he deserves to be knocked the f*ck out. Good for Roger."

Will Dana follow through or will we be fed some circular logic similar to the bat-shit crazy logic he used to rationalize cutting Miguel Torres for his rape joke while sparing Rashad Evans and Forrest Griffin the same treatment.

It is worth noting that Torres was reinstated and that Overeem has not been convicted of anything so he may be innocent, that said I doubt White will cut the Demolition Man even if found guilty because of his monetary value to the promotion. It would be in the sport's best interest if Dana White were consistent in his decisions to discipline fighters since it seems the regulation of out of ring fighter behavior is conducted somewhat arbitrarily.

I am a firm believer that you need to separate a man from his work.

Unless what he does in his personal life detracts from the quality of his work, then I don’t think it bears any relevance on their job. This goes for politicians as much as it does for fighters, singers, actors, etc… anyone in the public eye, or otherwise.

Richard Wagner is one of the most revolutionary and important composers of all time. He quite literally disintegrated the harmonic systems in music, and changed the structure of tonality. His operas and symphonies are beautiful and epic in scale, and he composed some of the most rousing arias and most recognizable tunes in the world. But he was also a noted anti- semite, and given his status in society, is credited with contributing to the rise of anti- semitism in late 19’th century Germany. So, maybe he wasn’t the best person, but his personal flaws don’t detract from his professional accomplishments.

Nietzsche’s writings on his former friend Wagner are amazing as he struggles with this.

I’m not entirely convinced that we should ignore the human who produces a work of art, considering art is an expression of the artist’s humanity. But then there’s a huge difference in writing an opera and engaging in a cage fight.

Getting bent out of shape over a fight promoter lying is like getting upset that a hooker won't kiss you. It betrays a deep lack of understanding of the nature of the profession.

I think they're very analagous in many ways.

Opera and MMA. They’re both the pinnacle of their respective fields- fighting is the ultimate sport. Opera is the ultimate form of art. They’re both made of the parts of all subsets of athletics (MMA- all fighting disciplines and aspects) or art (opera- audible art: singing, instruments; visual art- acting, set design, costuming).

There is a lot to be said for the separation of man and work

You make excellent points and it is unfortunate that employee code of conduct includes actions outside work.

I think part of the problem in a PR issue like this is public perception.

Like the gun sponsors that were banned because Fox felt they may hurt its image, MMA is at the cusp of mainstream so I find it a tricky situation worth debating.

StanLee, there is an excellent documentary on Hitler and Nietzsche available for stream on netflix, worth looking into, I think it is called Nietzsche and the Nazis or something.

I don't get why the public cares about these things, though.

I certainly don’t. If I’m watching a guy fight, I don’t care if he’s a womanizer, if he dislikes minorities, what his favorite color is, etc. I just care about their work in the cage.

Fox might care Rollo

I read the police report (it’s on ) it clearly states that he was cited for use of force or violence upon the person.

I wasn’t arguing to my view or yours but the legal perception of what constitutes battery and the position this puts AO in. I tried to explain that it could be something as trivial as knocking the hat off a person’s head and not only aggravated assault qualifies as battery, but my reasoning was ignored.

I dunno.

If the public didn’t raise a big stink about it than it wouldn’t be such a big deal, like Hank Williams Jr getting taken off MNF for calling the president Hitler.
I thought he was protected under the First Amendment but his likeness use was terminated. War Machine got cut from the UFC for saying a bunch of crazy stuff on his twitter account. Crazy rants, offensive, but on twitter, I don’t think he acted foolish during “work hours.”

I’m concerned about fairness, LJT mentioned that rather than the UFC being inconsistent because of the different dealings with fighters this MO shows the benefits of a case by case scenario.
I see a valid point in this position, but as a fight fan I want what is best for the fighters so if they are to be dealt with case-by-case they should have the right to some process of arbitration. War Machine sure could have benefited from one since he technically got fired for talking nonsense during his time off..

The misreading of Nietzsche that lends itself to Nazism is understandable. All it takes is some selective cherry-picking and ignoring that when he talks about power he is almost always talking about self-mastery rather than mastery over others.

While I agree that it isn’t that big of a deal if he simply pushed her away, we have to be honest and admit that Reem does seem to have a bit of a issue with the ladies and not knowing when enough is enough. That said, so does Rampage and he seems to still have a job.

Alistair is innocent until proven guilty, but the allegations are worth discussing I think.

Personally, I hope he is innocent since I enjoy his fights and often root for him.

If he is found guilty I would find it hard to root for him anymore and would argue he deserves to be treated the same as other fighters with similar offenses. My reasoning is that it really sends out the wrong message to casual fans and people who are on the fence regarding having sanctioned MMA in NY.

Think NFL, a sixth round draft pick is supposed to get the same punishment as the first pick of the draft if they are caught doing the same thing.

Consistency and accountability will only help legitimize MMA (IMO).

Brett Rogers getting cut before he plead guilty of anything, while Tito wasn’t released after his issue are another two excellent examples of UFC inconsistency in fighter conduct policy.

I hope the Reem is innocent, but if he isn’t, then they should be consistent. Picking and choosing who to discipline based on potential profiting really takes credibility away from any efforts towards validating MMA.

This is also kind of relevant to a fighters union, I know that if I was an employee somewhere and I wasn’t given the same treatment as others for the same offense at my work management would be receiving a call from my union representative the next day. As things are, fighters have to just take what is given or taken away with little recourse.

Stop. Please, please stop.

You are now comparing The Rogers case (where the victim was choked to the point of blacking out and lost teeth) to a case where the LVPD didn’t even feel the need to bring AO downtown (choosing to only write a citation for the incident).

You have no real information worthy of discussion. Keep these conversations for when that information is released.

by LTJbukem on Feb 1, 2012 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

Is a pattern of inconsistency not worth discussing?

I concede that drawing a parallel between AO and Rogers is a bit of a stretch, however, both cases involve violence by professional combat sports athletes (people who get paid to hurt people) displaying poor self-control and varying degrees of physical violence towards women (allegedly for AO).

This whole thing is sprinkled with conditionals like “if” and “should,” the point of this thread is discussing whether if Dana White should be consistent with fighters (regardless of who they are or their star power), hence the plethora of examples in which White has displayed inconsistent decision making.

Rollo, “varying degrees of violence” unfortunately for Overeem, whatever he did or didn’t do, is considered grounds for battery.

Battery is the use of force against another, resulting in harmful or offensive contact.
And when people read that he (allegedly) shoved a woman’s face, that is perceived as acting violently towards women.

Some facts on battery

The following elements must be proven to establish a case for battery: (1) an act by a defendant; (2) an intent to cause harmful or offensive contact on the part of the defendant; and (3) harmful or offensive contact to the plaintiff.

The Act The act must result in one of two forms of contact. Causing any physical harm or injury to the victim—such as a cut, a burn, or a bullet wound—could constitute battery, but actual injury is not required. Even though there is no apparent bruise following harmful contact, the defendant can still be guilty of battery; occurrence of a physical illness subsequent to the contact may also be actionable. The second type of contact that may constitute battery causes no actual physical harm but is, instead, offensive or insulting to the victim. Examples include spitting in someone’s face or offensively touching someone against his or her will.

Touching the person of someone is defined as including not only contacts with the body, but also with anything closely connected with the body, such as clothing or an item carried in the person’s hand. For example, a battery may be committed by intentionally knocking a hat off someone’s head or knocking a glass out of some-one’s hand.

Intent Although the contact must be intended, there is no requirement that the defendant intend to harm or injure the victim. In Tort Law, the intent must be either specific intent—the contact was specifically intended—or general intent—the defendant was substantially certain that the act would cause the contact. The intent element is satisfied in Criminal Law when the act is done with an intent to injure or with criminal negligence—failure to use care to avoid criminal consequences. The intent for criminal law is also present when the defendant’s conduct is unlawful even though it does not amount to criminal negligence.

Intent is not negated if the aim of the contact was a joke. As with all torts, however, consent is a defense.
