UFC 143: Georges St. Pierre Is Rooting For Nick Diaz Out Of 'Hate'

Photo

Injured UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre is making no bones about picking a fighter to root for to win the interim welterweight title at UFC 143 on Saturday. The champ wants Nick Diaz to beat Carlos Condit, but perhaps his mind is clouded by passion. Passionate disdain for Diaz that is. Here's GSP talking to UFC.com:

"I am very nervous that Carlos Condit will win on Saturday night, and that I won't be able to fight Nick Diaz this summer. I feel bad, it is weird that I want (Condit) to lose, but I have never wanted to fight anyone as much as I want to fight Diaz. I don't truly hate him as a person. I don't know that he is a bad guy, but I hate what he brings to the sport with the disrespect and the unprofessional things he says and does. It is sort of a professional hatred. He has been nothing but disrespectful and arrogant towards me.

"I respect Carlos Condit, but I want Diaz to win. It will be a weird feeling, sitting at the Mandalay Bay wanting Nick Diaz to win. I want this fight with Diaz so badly, as badly as I wanted the title shot when I got down on my knees. I have never asked (UFC President) Dana White for anything, but I did ask to fight Nick Diaz. I was (crushed) when I had to pull out of this weekend's fight hurt, but I am determined to get back to the Octagon as soon as possible to fightthis guy. He needs to hold up his part and beat Carlos Condit on Saturday to make this fight happen.

""The way I see it, I am not the champion anymore on Saturday night. I have not fought since April, against my will, but I understand the champion must fight. You have to put the belt on the line in order to call yourself champion, the best in the world. Right now I am not the best in the world, I am injured. The winner of this fight on Saturday will be more than just the new No.1 contender, but he won't be the new champion either. The winner of this fight will have to beat me to become the true world champion and I will have to beat the winner of this fight in order to call myself the best in the world again.."

GSP was originally set to fight Diaz at UFC 143 but had to pull out in early December for reconstructive surgery to repair a torn right ACL. He had to miss a scheduled title fight with Condit at UFC 137 due to a strained right MCL. He is expected to return to face the interim champion in the summer or fall of 2012.

indeed

I think the victory in Georges’ head will be stifling Nick’s weapons and frustrating him, holding him to no action.
That will be sort of awesome, but probably unsatisfying for the fans.
As for Nick, he doesn’t do boring fights, so we’ll see.

He's out of competition for almost a year, people've been calling him irrelevant and asking whether he should be stripped of his title.

In addition, the onlookers get bored of their gladiators’ ‘safe’ style of fighting. My guess: somebody told him that while he isn’t fighting, he needed to at least market himself and have himself talked about. And they’re probably right.

Not going to happen

Gsp will bring too much emotion to the table against Diaz and will lose due to carelessness. Diaz will become the undisputed welterweight champ and all will be right with the world.

A 100% healthy gsp would have a perfect style…of lay n pray for 5the rounds. Truth is no one comes back 100% from an acl tear, its just not reality. Diaz is going down

By points or submission. GSP is a technical fighter. Is that why everyone is against him? You’d rather see a lesser talented guy at stand up but good on the ground just throwing crazy punches like what’s-his-face? Leonard Garcia? That’s entertaining? No. I’ll be just fine if GSP grinds Diaz by points or submission…or if he breaks his face the way he did to Koscheck.

That’s a rather nuanced view point on the differences between champion and number one. Not what you’d hear from some meat head jock. I think GSP lives up to his “intelligent athlete” persona.

Intelligent Athlete?

Dr. Rhadi Ferguson, yes.

GSP, not so much.

It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about wrestling, it doesn’t matter if we’re talking about judo. It doesn’t matter if you’re talking about football. All those sports require the understanding of distance, space, time and the implementation of velocity, not speed but velocity. All those are the same, can all be broken down as a battle over territory. Football is the battle back-and-forth over territory. Boxing battle over foot placement and territory. Wrestling, battle over territory which is the circle. It’s all the same. It’s the individuals who don’t understand the art of war by Sun Tzu. They get things mixed up because all t hey see is the end point — all they see is the kung fu or the karate or judo or wrestling. They don’t see the root of art itself. The root of the Art of War. There’s no difference. Absolutely zero difference.

If this were anyone but gsp I'd say nick has already won

Diaz has already won the mental game going into this fight by making the other person Yale things way too personally. Most any other fighter would get hot headed and make mistakes in the cage. But this is GSP. When GSP becomes very emotionally invested and charged in a fight, he personifies what we all look for in a champion. Consider Hughes 2, Serra 2, and BJ 2. He transforms into an extremely fierce, super focused, incredibly skilled fighter who destroys people.

by Cocytus on Feb 1, 2012 11:28 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Huh?

Maybe I’m off base here, but if GSP got down on his knees to beg for a title hasn’t he already asked Dana White for something? Does it not count because getting on your knees is more like begging?

I guess this is kind of like when GSP says that his half-hour sessions of dry humping his opponents don’t make him a boring fighter, but rather a safe one. Because safe is exciting!

I wonder if it would be better for mma

if Diaz won? If he beat Condit and GSP, that would be huge and possibly make him a big draw for ppvs. Maybe not, but with his personality and fighting style I could see it happening. Also, we’d get to see GSP’s quest for a title shot again, and setting up a big rematch in Diaz vs GSP 2.

If GSP wins though, and this time not in a boring decision, maybe that would be better since it would get some hype and excitement around him again instead of whats going on now.

I hope they bring GSP in the ring after Diaz wins the title. Nick will tell him to his face that he is scared and faking injuries.

Cute..

GSP went to WWE-school and took “How to make a narrative in a fight 101”. Get ready for a post-fight hug.
