In the first boring fight of the night, Raphael Assuncao countered his way to a decision over Mike Easton
After two other opponents pulled out due to injury, Mike Easton finally got matched against Raphael Assuncao for their UFC On Fox 5 Bantamweight fight. Easton came into the bout on a 3-fight winning streak capped off with a decision win over Ivan Menjivar. Assuncao had two UFC wins under his belt with a second round KO over Issei Tamura in his last fight. He initially weighed in just over the 136 lb. limit, but was able to make weight on his second try.
Easton and Assuncao started off with the first round contested almost all on the feet. Assuncao frustrated Easton with solid counters and off beat kicks. In the last minute, Raphael went to switch it up with a takedown. Easton defended well, but ended up with his back on the fence.
More of the same throughout round 2. Assuncao definitely landing the better shots, one to Easton's eye that hurt "The Hulk's" vision. They clinch against the cage and Raphael lands an accidental low blow. When they action restarted, Assuncao got right back into rhythm countering Easton.
Assuncao did a great job of making Easton miss throughout the fight. He shot for an unsuccessful single leg, but clearly controlled the action through the first half of the 3rd round. The crowd booed heavily later in the round - can't really blame them. The fight wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good either. The action slowed way down in the last couple minutes. Raphael Assuncao took a unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27) over Mike Easton.
