There's been a change of plans for Erik Koch and Ricardo Lamas. After the two featherweight contenders were booked for the preliminary card of UFC 155, they've now been switched to UFC on FOX 6 in Chicago. MMA Junkie has the story:
Featherweights Erik Koch (13-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) and Ricardo Lamas (12-2 MMA, 3-0 UFC) will meet when the UFC returns to Chicago in January for UFC on FOX 6. Sources with knowledge of the fight on Wednesday confirmed its new date to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).
This is a potential #1 contender fight, and while there's no confirmation yet, it should get a spot on the main card ... unless they want to yet again put Ricardo Lamas on the prelims, where he has been for all of his fights in the last three years.
Koch hasn't fought since September 2011, winning a decision over Jonathan Brookins. He was awarded a title shot against Jose Aldo, but injuries to Aldo and Koch on the two occasions they've scheduled this fight have put Koch out of a title shot.
Lamas is 3-0 at featherweight after mixed results at lightweight. He pulled off a stunning upset win over Hatsu Hioki at UFC on FX 4 in June. He also submitted fellow featherweight contender Cub Swanson on the first FOX card last November.
It's very possible there's a strategic timing decision behind this, as UFC on FOX 6 takes place January 26th, exactly one week before Jose Aldo defends his featherweight belt against Frankie Edgar on Super Bowl weekend. For that reason alone this one shouldn't be wasted on FUEL TV.
This FOX card just keeps getting better and better and better, and only five fights have been announced!
