I will make this relatively short since I have a ton more Pride FC to still watch. The mathcup took place at the first Pride Shockwave event on August 28th, 2002. Royce fought Hidehiko in a special rules match which was basically a submission grappling match. At approximately 7 and a half minutes into the fight, Yoshida was in full mount and was trying to finish a gi choke on Rocye. Royce was conscious and still trying to free himself from the choke and clearly had no intention of tapping. Yoshida told the referee he was out and the referee took his word for it and stopped the bout. Royce jumped up immediately confused and understandably upset while Pride officials were trying to make sense of the mess. Yoshida walked around celebrating like he tapped out Royce while very clearly knowing he did not and lied to the referee about him being out. I watched that fight and paused it after that fight to write this. Yoshida is now one of the few fighters I have zero respect for because any fighter who would actually lie to the referee to get the match called off has zero respect for his opponent or the spirit of martial arts. I really hope fighters like him cease to exist in our sport because if that shit happens in the UFC on a major card or Fox card, holy hell the backlash...I really am happy to see he got knocked out by James Thompson later in his career as he earned the right in my eyes to have to fight Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez combined. Ya people that shit pissed me off. Good night all.
