Live blog of the black belt open class divisions (men and women separately) on Saturday, November 3, 2012. Thanks to BudoVideos and the multi-mat technology, we can follow the action live and discuss the happenings with you readers.
The 2012 No Gi Worlds (submission grappling without the gi uniform that is a staple of Brazilian jiu jitsu) are taking place in the Walter Pyramid aka the Long Beach Pyramid right now.
The tournament is stuffed to the gills with superlative submission grapplers - men and women in their blue, purple, brown and black belt divisions - and takes both Saturday and Sunday to complete. Today, the coverage focuses primarily on the black belt openweight divisions, while tomorrow (Sunday), the coverage moves to a full day blogathon.
Thanks to BudoVideos and their ridiculously good video streams - complete with multi-mat technology - we can watch the matches live despite not being physically present in Long Beach, California. The stream can be bought at http://online.budovideos.com/ and will cost $19.95 for both days or $10.95 for a single day (Saturday or Sunday). Having watched many grappling and MMA events streaming online, I can say with confidence that the BudoVideos stream is at the very top for quality of video and quality of commentary.

Lo and Herzog trading positions, it's 4 advantages to Lo and 2 for Herzog. More super dexterous guard work from Lo and he flips over Herzog, but cannot take advantage of it.

He looks up to his coaches and Assis looks pained. Reset in the middle due to them being on the edge of things. Peinado maybe working a north/south choke, yep. Assis looks like he's definitely in pain now. Peinado walking around and getting down tight for the choke. Assis still resisting! He taps! Wow! Biiiiig statement win for Batista here. Batistaa advances.
Xande vs. Bernardo Faria
Standing in the middle, kind of motionless. Xande is a counter-gripper, so he hates moving in first. Faria seems to be the same as well. Other guy shoots in for a single and then pulls guard. Xande on top and looking to crawl his right arm up to control the head and arm. Other guy appears to be going for a deep half, but cannot get under Xande well. Xande gets head control and appears to be trying to cradle Faria. Xande scrambles into a mount, but gets bucked into quarter mount. Xande appears to be crushing Faria with pressure. Faria bucks out and scrambles to half guard. Xande passes again to side control and tries to work into knee on belly. Faria pulls back to half guard and open guard. Xande gets to half again and starts shoulder crushing pressure. Faria looks ridiculously uncomfortable. Bernardo bucks free again and a scramble sees Xande running away before sprawling as Faria dives for a takedown. Back to half guard for Xande on top and Faria on the bottom. Xande tries a kimura, but it's too much space and Faria gets up. After some moving around, Faria pulls guard and Xande moves to half. Xande trying to post up and attack a kimura. Faria has his arm buried in and lets go of the legs entirely. Xande spins for a farside armbar and actually gets great position. 30 seconds left and Xande trying to extend the arm and do a wristlock maybe. Faria resisting superbly, but it's still dangerous. Faria spins out and up to guard. Wow. Xande wins.

DJ shrugs free and Lo falls to the ground. DJ back in the guard trying to pass. Lo has an advantage from that back take attempt. DJ working the left pass once more. Lo using his hands to push DJ off there while actively scrambling around to prevent the pass. About 2 minutes left to go. DJ backs out and then goes back in trying to get that left pass from the half guard. Lo staying calm and looks at the clock. Referee stops the match briefly as he notices blood or something on DJ's lip. Looks like both competitors are getting their lips worked on. Back. DJ goes double unders and Lo resists the guard pass. Wow. This is incredible work from Lo and DJ. Reset to the middle. DJ starts as if he'll try to pass right then backs out and starts going left again. Lo resisting. Lo's open guard work is stymieing DJ who is working the double unders. DJ comes close to slamming Lo, but it isn't illegal or a pass. Lo still resisting as time runs out! Leandro Lo advances.
Leandro Lo vs. Peinado:
Lo on the top, Peinado working butterfly and Lo being super scrambly. Lo being cautious now and batting with his right hand as Batista fights off the grip. It's really boring right now. After a little scrambling, they reset in the middle. More of the same. Lo trying to work a right side over hook and a left side ankle grip simultaneously. Peinado butt scooting away. They reset in the middle. Peinado gets in RDLR, but backs out and they edge out again. Reset in the middle. More of same, another reset. This is dreadfully boring and it's pretty much both their faults. Lo for not varying and Peinado for doing essentially nothing but back away. Lo finally in a bit more and trying to throw Peinado's legs aside. Peinado resists and works to butterfly, while on his back. Lo trying to float over Peinado's butterfly without luck and works back to his feet. Lo working a leg drag and Peinado butt scoots back to beat it, but out of bounds. They reset to the middle and Lo gets an advantage and Peinado a penalty point. Lo back to the batting in with the right hand and scoop the left hand too. Peinado batting away. 3 and a half minutes left to go. More of this nonsense. Peinado could just shoot in for a single all match but hasn't. Peinado is getting more active now. He's butt scooting forwards and trying to sweep Lo overhead. Lo jumps out of danger and out of an omoplata. 1 minute and 30 seconds. Lo comes in and Peinado is gripping for a sweep. Lo resisting and staying balanced. Lo trying to get past, but Peinado scoots back and retains guard. Lo flipping around like a deranged monkey, but not getting past. 40 seconds.
