In an unexpected but great move, the UFC on FOX 5 prelims will NOT air on FUEL TV, but instead on a much larger and accessible media outlet in FX. Ariel Helwani confirmed this yesterday.
Next month's UFC on FOX 5 prelims will air on FX and Facebook, not FUEL TV.
Prior to this year's three UFC on FOX telecasts, the main prelims have aired on FUEL TV, however, the promotion and network have decided to move them to FX this time around. UFC president Dana White confirmed the switch with MMAFighting.com on Tuesday.
Great great great news. Did I mention it was great? This is surely another sign that FOX and the UFC are making a concerted push to address their less-than-stellar ratings from the last two FOX shows in May and August. It's effectively the same strategy as the PPV cards, only if Joe Rogan and Dana White are yelling at each other, it's to tell you to tune in to a free network TV channel instead of forking over money.
As far as the fights? Six of them will air on FX and then the remaining three will be streamed on Facebook.
FX fights (5 PM ET/2 PM PT): Brendan Schaub vs. Lavar Johnson, Michael Chiesa vs. Marcus LeVesseur, Nam Phan vs. Dennis Siver, Daron Cruickshank vs. Henry Martinez, Yves Edwards vs. John Cholish, Ramsey Nijem vs. Joe Proctor
If I have to quibble, it is ridiculous that top 10 BW Mike Easton can't even make FX.
UFC on FOX 6 prelims, which includes fights such as T.J. Grant vs. Matt Wiman and Clay Guida vs. Hatsu Hioki, will also air on FX with "lesser fights" presumably broadcast on Facebook as has been the case for the other FOX cards.
