Earlier today, former Strikeforce women's Featherweight champion Cristiane Santos released a statement that her doctor advised her against a potential cut to Bantamweight. Over the last few months "Cyborg" Santos has been in a war of words with current 135 lb. champ Ronda Rousey over what weight the two should meet at. Cyborg says Rousey should return to 145 lbs. where she's had the majority of her professional fights, while Rousey insists that if Santos wants the fight she should drop down to the lighter division.

By all appearances, Cristiane's doctor put the brakes on the latter option was medically unsafe for her and could potentially do irreparable harm to her ability to have children. It didn't take long for Ronda's manager Darin Harvey to respond to the doctor's claims (via Yahoo! Sports):

If you ask five doctors, you'll get five different opinions. I guarantee you, you can find doctors that'll say the weight cut will be fine. It all depends on what side they're working for.

It's her doctor. If you're going to trial, I can find a professional witness to make you look innocent or make you look guilty.

We want that fight because it's a big money fight. We want to fight Cyborg and I think Ronda can beat her at any weight. But I believe if she's not taking drugs, 135 pounds will be absolutely no problem.

I don't want to see anyone get hurt long-term … but my personal belief is she can lose the weight. She would just prefer an advantage to fight at 145 pounds. And I think we have the advantage at 135.

So, we're pretty much back at the starting point again. However, the big news last week regarding the closing of Strikeforce and Rousey's move to the UFC could play a big part in whether or not the fight happens. Harvey told Yahoo that he thinks that fight could do over 1 million PPV buys. That kind of visibility and the financial incentive it brings could convince Rousey to take the fight at Featherweight or catchweight.

There's plenty of time to work out the details though. Cyborg has another two months left on her suspension for testing positive for steroids last January. Additionally, Miesha Tate is reported to be the second woman ever signed to the UFC, which means a rematch between her and Rousey should be the first WMMA in the company. So it seems more likely that Cyborg would be Rousey's second opponent in the UFC at best.
