In the main event of UFC on Fuel 6, former Strikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le surprised just about everyone and knocked out former UFC middleweight champion Rich Frankin with one punch halfway through the first round. The first couple of minutes looked good for Franklin, but after a leg kick he completely dropped his hands and leaned away while Le threw a slightly-delayed counter right that caught Franklin on the jaw and sent him crashing to the mat, immediately unconscious. It was an incredible finish from a guy that is known for having excellent skills, but not a lot of power.
The win improved Le's UFC record to 2-1, while Frankin falls to 14-6 in his storied UFC career. The bout was Franklin's first middleweight bout in over four years.
What was the high point of the fight?
The knockout. It was a picture-perfect shot that immediately turned Franklin's lights out.
Where do they go from here?
It's tough to see where either man will go. Retirement is something that has been discussed for both fighters, but neither is likely to hang em up at this point. Le has said that he wants to take some time off and hang out with his family. I'd like to see him face Chris Leben next if Leben can get by Karlos Vemola at UFC 155. As for Franklin, I think a bout with Roger Gracie (assuming he does indeed come over from Strikeforce) would be great.
Watch now, later, or never?
Now. On a card full of decisions, this is the best value-for-time fight on the card. You get a brutal KO, and only have to use up three minutes of your life.
