Wanderlei Silva says that he'll be back in 2013, possibly in a different weight class.
The Axe Murderer didn't have the best 2012. After a stint as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter Brazil, he expected to face off with old nemesis Vitor Belfort. Instead, Belfort backed out with an injury and Wandy lost a decision to Rich Franklin at UFC 147. Then in August, he got the unfortunate news that his father had passed away in a car accident. Obviously anyone would need some time off after suffering such a tragedy, but Silva did take the time to talk to Sherdog about what his plans are for the future. And they are to return next year, and possibly at a weight class other than middleweight:
I want to either fight a catchweight bout at 198 pounds (93 kg) or at light heavyweight. At middleweight, I'm very hungry (laughs). Right now, I'm doing weight training and some shadow boxing. I'm kind of on vacation now, paying attention to the family, but next year the Wand is back.
And who does he want to fight?
Actually, anyone they offer is good for me. I'll face whomever the UFC wants.
Personally I think going back to the Belfort fight early next year makes some sense, but a lot of others (ie. Wandy fans) disagree. If they'd rather put Silva into some exciting slugfests that aren't as relevant, I'd say give him the winner of the Patrick Cote vs. Alessio Sakara bout at UFC 154.
