A couple days after the announcement of TUF Jones vs Sonnen and the title shot to follow, I was hit by an epiphany that I hadn't visited in-depth before. That epiphany is as follows; If you can last more than one round with anyone in the UFC, win enough to stay employed, and take on the mentality of fighting anyone, anytime.....you will get paid, Dana will take care of you forever, and you will get undeserved opportunities at every turn
Think about that for a second, fighting anyone anytime including short notice is risky, thats where entertaining fans and lasting more than a round comes in. Take for example though, Josh Koscheck. Josh is famous for not only being a dickhead, but his mentality of fighting anyone, anytime, anywhere. The reality of the situation is, Josh Koscheck will probably NEVER be the UFC WW or MW champion, BUT he could quit the UFC today and retire if he wanted to. Part of that is his investments outside of the UFC, but the initial income to invest came from Dana White. The reason for that is, Josh doesn't get finished. He may not win every fight, but I don't believe there's a welterweight alive that could finish him consistently more than 20% of the time. This opens him up to a world of financial possibilities because he has the ability to pick up fights anytime, get paid more often than anyone else, and still stay employed by the UFC because he can beat probably close to 70% of the division on an average day.
Now let's talk about Chael Sonnen. Chael's overall record in the UFC is 6-5 overall. 11 UFC fights, 54.5% win rate, but his 12th UFC fight will be his third title shot. Let that sink in, statistically 1 in 4 of Chael Sonnen's UFC fights has been a title fight so far. So how does a UFC MW/LHW with a 54% win rate get so many title shots?? The 3 factors I mentioned above, Chael has only been finished once in the first round in his UFC career, by Damian Maia. He entertains people because he can consistently hang with anyone for at least a round. He wins enough to stay employed, I would draw a comparison to someone else that close to .500 in the UFC but I'll give you a hint, (THE UFC DOESN'T KEEP THEM AROUND), and because he will fight anyone, anytime; including the 2nd or 3rd greatest MMA fighter around according to most MMA publications.
The third and most dysfunctional part of this love triangle is Dana White. Dana has consistently thrown Sonnen favorable matchups. Whats the common denominator between Dan Miller, Yushin Okami, Nate Marquardt, Brian Stann, and Michael Bisping? Not a single one of them is known for their submission skills. Heck if DFW could have somehow sidelined AS with an injury or something of the like, you bet he would have found a favorable opponent for Chael to takedown and lay on for 5 rounds and collect the interim belt. Unification bouts only mean one thing to Dana White and thats $$$$$. Bottom line is, more UFC fighters need to realize that if they can keep their jobs, they'd benefit from being a company man, and thats proven. All you have to do is follow the trail of checks.
P.S. this is my very first fan post, so be easy on me? Thanks for reading!!
