I know what you're thinking. How am I going to logically defend the ridiculousness of giving a title shot to a man who is coming off of a loss and has yet to even fight in the division he'll be fighting for the title of? It's simple, really. Jon Jones needs time for his arm to heal and recover. What do we know about fighters who need to take long layoffs to recover from injuries? A lot of times, they don't come back at 100%. In this instance, Jones vs Sonnen is something that a lot of fans have been calling for: a tune up fight.
It may seem like Chael Sonnen doesn't deserve this fight, but that's because he doesn't. The thing is, this is the perfect fight for Jones to have upon his return. Chael is a good fighter, and has the ability to be a top 2-5 fighter in any division he chooses, but he is not on Jon Jones level. Even if Jones doesn't come back at 100%, he'll probably have more than enough to defeat Sonnen. He isn't a softball, but isn't the guy to dethrone Jones either.
Finally, there is the fact that Chael is a one man hype machine. Jones is going to have to deal with a level of Sonnen's trolling that we have never seen before. By the end of the season there will probably be legitimate hatred on Jones part. This will likely lead to a successful season of TUF, and a PPV with a good buy rate, insuring lots of money for all parties involved.
While this fight may seem like a WWE storyline, I think on most levels, it makes sense to put together.
