Something HAS to be done about Kim Winslow

Something HAS to be done about Kim Winslow. I mean from the Gian Villante stoppage to the King Mo stoppage to the Jan Finney beating Cyborg gave her all the way to Jeremy Stephens KO'ing Marcus Davis. Here is another one...Only this time, it's wait for it...an early submission stoppage. How many big fights is she going to get before she is reprimanded?

We all remember Dakota Cochrane..right? Upset Jamie Varner at Titan FC.

Well here is the fight with him and my good friend Corey Simpson attached. You can skip forward to the 9 minute mark if you’d like..The “stoppage” occurs 9:09-9:10 into the video. She stopped it due to a RNC, although you can clearly see there was NO tap, he WAS defending himself and he didn’t even have the choke completely applied. Take a look for yourself I believe this is one Kim Winslow's worst calls and bad thing is it has got swept under the radar.

i can see why she stopped the fight

his face was turning purple and he was defending it for at least a minute. maybe she thought he had enough.

in all seriousness, that was a ridiculous stoppage. He wasn’t even close to going unconscious and some people’s faces just get more easily flushed than others.

Ha

I literally LOL’ed at your first comment. I know, it was just turrible. Even the announcers were confused.

That was pretty awful.

And inexcusable. I’m a ref (not mma or any combat sport) and know we’re prone to error. But her mistakes cost people fights and exposes to additional harm and potential injury. She seriously needs evaluation and limited assignments but I assume a shortage in trained refs is the reason she gets big fights which seem way too frequent.

I agree..

Something needs to be done. In baseball, baketball, football that stuff happens but this is peoples careers, paychecks, bonuses, lives, injuries, etc. Bad thing is I can think of atleast 3 of those incidents in different states. That video comes from North Dakota.

in ball sports

awful reffing is fine because there are always more referees on the field and it’s not just ONE REF who has complete authoritah to do whatever he/she thinks is fine.

maybe that’s the solution is have another ref, not in the cage but case side to demand stand ups or point detractions, ie blatant fence grabbing and the like.

That was terrible, he was still wide awake and defending. There were no signs of him being anywhere near out. She needs a new job.

I'm gonna give you three seconds; exactly three-fucking-seconds to wipe that stupid looking grin off your face or I will gouge out your eyeballs and skull-fuck you!

Hopefully...

This video and whatever other ones that are out there can help prove a point that she is incompetent.

if you do not like refs or AC's / the ABC unified rules of MMA that enable us to enjoy MMA in a mainstream manner

BECOME ONE AND AFFECT A CHANGE FROM THE INSIDE, or join the ABC

ELSE: keep opining online, Critics just criticize

Good post.

I hope that this inspires others to take the ref and judge courses that Herb Dean and Big John teach. I have a friend who took both courses and he said he’ll be taking them again when they roll through Vancouver.

I will definitely be joining him.

In all reality I think we as an MMA community are a joke if we can’t produce a host of competent referees within the next 10 years. We’ve identified the problem and we have the ability to correct it.

That being said, I see posts like this as a unfortunate necessity to keep the issue in the forefront of our minds.

Like I stated I'm saving money for an ABC approved course

so I can eventually ref

Could you please have your buddy regale me with stories of his experience? I was leaning MMARS but I figured COMMAND is solid, I just like Herb

and I just rewatched it

and Larkins was still sorta covering / wasn’t fully out / was getting rocked and as soon as really faded and wasn’t able to come back she stepped in

it wasn’t like it was impressive standing strike followed up, it was a double followed by some non flush quasi power GnP after a little scuffle.

Golly larkins could tap if he didn’t feel like continuing, and he wasn’t really done for until the final 3 shots before / as she is stepping in

whatever
it is what it is

I'm pretty sure that he took both courses...

…he’s a casual friend through watching MMA at a mutual buddies place, so I haven’t had the chance to talk to him too much about the experience.

He said he had a harder time with the judging portion that he did the referee stuff. Apparently in MMARS a portion of the final exam was to judge Shogun/Machida I and provide an in-depth explanation of why you scored it the way you did.

Other than that he said it was an awesome experience.

the way I look at it is

King Mo is a fighter, worry about fighting and knock a mother fucker out cold so there is no doubt, don’t shoot a double and come with some glancing GnP
Larkins: you don’t want to be here anymore? Tap!

Blatant incompetence isn’t debatable…
nobody is perfect and Larkins wasn’t truly not defending himself until the last 2-3 punch

Also I’m not quitting my day job, I want to pursue refing as hobby (that I could parlay into a career???)

Freakin ridiculous

Sorry but she has no clue. Refs need to be constantly evaluated, she is completely incompetent. Late stoppages, awful standups from dominant positions and this! She needs to find something else to do with her life. And a new hairdo would be good jeez.

Does anyone know her background?

by taptomyarmbar on Jan 10, 2012 1:44 AM EST reply actions

From what I've read.

She is a former air traffic controller, and competed in TKD and BJJ. All I’ve heard. I just find it funny this is all over the King Mo fight. There have been WAY later stoppages and she has had way worse calls IMO.

For sure

It’s hard to recall a fight I have seen her referee where she doesn’t do something dumb.

by taptomyarmbar on Jan 10, 2012 5:23 AM EST up reply actions

she has made worse calls, definitely

this was still a bad one though and yet again shines the spotlight on her. She’ll be fine though, the ACs seem to reward incompetence for some reason. I mean shit, Mazzagatti is still reffing and that chubby dude with the bad haircut who stood up Jordan Mein mid-Kimura attempt has been around for a good while too.

Any chance of getting this changed to a NC

Truthfully

He has unfortunately never had great management so I don’t believe it was ever contested. He has a fight this Friday night for Josh Neer’s promotion and we were talking about it and watching it so it made me post it. We have hated her ever since. I assume there is probably a deadline and it has since passed but I could be wrong.

That's a damn shame

Your friend was straight-up robbed. I’m really surprised he kept it together in the cage, I probably would have been freaking the fuck out. I mean, he was definitely losing the fight, but I guess this was before Kim’s new view of “every chance to come back.”

YES

Oh god yes, I seriously cannot recall one-two fights she has done well. It’s crazy to think she is so bad..in all aspects of her job.

Terrible

Winslow has occasional moments where she shines

But she’s so prone to ridiculous blunders where she screws up whole fights

shes a fackin loyabillity

I completely forgot about..

The Rousey-Budd fight, she let her arm get snapped. Weird. She is so inconsistent.

Sidenote..

My buddy won by TKO in the 2nd round at 155 lbs. That’s two straight victories after a long lay off, against a Strikeforce veteran in Justin DeMoney at 170 lbs and 155 lbs against Josh Henry. (Both of which came in and didn’t make weight.)
