Based on tonight event, is it a good idea for strikeforce to contiue or should they have just folded everyone into UFC?

Keeps a potential competitor out of CBS/Showtime. I used to think that this was the reasoning behind this, but now, who knows? It was certainly a smart move IF they can drive interest in the product on Showtime, and?

Things like that are what CBS gets ratings from. Combat-sports just don’t sell on CBS. FOX has a much better chance.

Right now

It’s hard to say what Zuffa gains, but it does diversify their product reach and does give them a lot of control over the landscape of the sport.

So Luke Rockhold calling out UFC fighters was cute.

He still has to fight Kennedy and in all honesty should probably run it back with Jacare. It’s not like he’s miles ahead of the rest of the SF middleweights.

Me

I think it’s most laughable that the main event of the 3/3 show is apparently Tate vs. Rousey, given that the challenger hasn’t even fought on Showtime yet, and Tate hasn’t fought since July. With that card I’ll be surprised if they draw more than a few thousand at most to the Nationwide Arena.

Honestly now, it was Showtime Challengers, which almost doesn’t even count.

As for the finals of the Heavyweight Grand Prix, it was implied by Cormier during his interview on the show that he wasn’t ready for 3/3.

I think that generally only controls the OS volume anyway

But if that won’t get it up to a “normal” volume, then you’ve probably got either blown out speakers, or a bad connection. If it sounds like trash with headphones then you’ve got a bad soundcard (or at least a bad amp on the card), and a PCMCIA or ExpressCard soundcard for the headphones.

I think the problem is that Strikeforce punched above their weight with the HW GP and began to take them seriously. They should be right down there with BAMMA and Tachai Palace but with better talent

by Our Bovine Public on Jan 8, 2012 1:34 AM EST up reply actions

Probably

What irks me about them is that Strikeforce has 5-10 really good fighters that are being held back because of the SHO contract. Like Forrest said, guys like Mo, Rockhold and Melendez are toiling in mediocrity, while there are some completely random scrubs being picked up for UFC fights.

just said this above

There are some really good fighters that would make a legit impact in the UFC. If they can move the whole HW division I think they should be able to move th elite in each division and just call SF what it is

Quietly leading Cecil Peoples Champs to victory and beyond.

All in the game yo, all in the game

by Our Bovine Public on Jan 8, 2012 1:37 AM EST up reply actions

Contractually, they can't

Showtime didn’t want a league full of nobodys, and part of the contract was what we see today with the UFC more or less holding them back in Strikeforce. Melendez was pretty much slated to move up, but SHO killed it. You notice that one day Melendez is talking about UFC fights, and around the time the Showtime extension is announced he isn’t? That was why.

It is, and it isn't

A league with a few good fighters will have people tuning in to see those fighters. A league with none will have only the hardcores tuning in. Showtime wants the best that they can get, and if that’s only a handfull of good fighters that’s what they’ll take.

But how about this.. if you had tonight’s card, without all of the name fighters on the name card, would you tune in? At that point you’ve got a card that has less name value than the MFC. And there aren’t many people watching that promotion.

Well, you're an anomly

At this point, without anyone with a name, they’re no better than a random HDNET Fights event. I don’t usually watch Challengers because there isn’t usually anyone worth watching; the fights tonight, and Strikeforce going forward, are essentially Challengers, but with a few name fighters. Not huge draws, since they don’t have them anymore, but names none the less.

I feel like at this point their BEST outlook is that they can develop up and comers, but they’ll probably just tread water where they’re at today. Of course, they’re going to piss off whatever name fighters they’ve got today (Melendez, etc), but that’s what will happen with that model.

That’s the thing though. It wasn’t Mo’s potential. It was Feijao’s ability to nullify Mo’s game, because Mo is pretty limited as a fighter. Great wrestler, hard hitter, but his striking isn’t very diverse and stuffing his takedown attempts puts him in a bad position.

I can’t see Mo beating the best at 205. Anyone with solid defensive wrestling is going to have a big advantage.

And drunk Joben has arived!

First, their heavyweight division was just as strong as the UFC’s. Admittedly top heavy, but they had some of the top talent in the world.

Second, their divisions throughout the divisions were definitely but, they pretty much had a top talent in each division. Hendo was one at LHW, with Mo and Mousasi and Cavalcante to fill out the top of the division. Diaz ruled WW and Jacare at MW.

Now they’ve lost the majority of the top level talent they had and have zero draws left.

I was thinking Fitch takes him down, Woodley panics, gives up his back, and then choke.

Sure he's scared

At this point, he probably knows that when he loses they’ll cut him. There isn’t much need for a fighter that is less compelling to watch than Fitch.

They aren't legal anywhere

I can only assume the ref didn’t call it because he was on his back, and didn’t know any better. Any time your arm goes in that movement with the elbow in that motion it’s an illegal blow.

yes they are legal

because they are 6 to 12, not 12 to 6 if you throw them from bottom.

huh?

how does that work? Isn’t 12:6 in relation to the fighters and not bottom or top?

It WOULD be 3-9

Except that it’s not the orientation of the body, it’s the elbow going straight from the head down towards the feet. It’s the point of the elbow that they’re worried about, since some fool saw a guy breaking blocks and got freaked out.
