Cody McKenzie Injured, Shane Roller in Against Michael Johnson at UFC on Fox 2

Another injury has hit the UFC on Fox 2 card, and now it's guillotine afficionado, Cody McKenzie, who's been forced to bow out of a scheduled lightweight bout with his fellow TUF cast-mate, Michael Johnson. Stepping in to fight Johnson will be Shane Roller, according to MMA Junkie

Roller will only have a few weeks to prepare for Johnson, but he's likely eager to get back in the Octagon as soon as possible, after suffering what he believed was a controversial loss to T.J. Grant back at UFC on Versus 6. The fight was stopped by referee Fernando Yamasaki when Grant had Roller locked in a tight armbar, but Roller claims he never tapped or verbally submitted.

Shane Roller (10-5)
L T.J. Grant (technical submission) - UFC on Versus 6
L Melvin Guillard (KO) - UFC 132
W Thiago Tavares (KO) - UFC on Versus 3
Michael "The Menace" Johnson (9-6)
L Paul Sass (submission) - UFC on Versus 6
W Edward Faaloloto (TKO) - UFC on Versus 4
L Jonathan Brookins (unam. decision) - TUF 12 Finale

Both guys should bring it.

As they are both likely fighting for their UFC lives.

Roller could survive this

Given the short notice. But Johnson likely will not.

I like both guys

Roller might survive a loss due to stepping up on short notice, but it would be a huge blow to the momentum he had built with his big KO of Tavares in his UFC debut. 1-3 will be near-impossible to claw back from, and dude was flashing as a triple threat after that punch (wrestling, BJJ, striking).

Even with the KO of Tavares, it was pretty clear he wasn’t a triple threat. He hits hard and can take a punch, but he has limited weapons and is pretty sloppy.

IIRC, Tavares was repeatedly backing straight up when Roller was putting his double jab out there and paid the price.

Anyway, I think this fight makes a lot more sense. Johnson is a terrible matchup for Cody.

Mincing my words

“Flashing as”. His BJJ is probably his most formidable weapon, which is a bit unusual— since he was a three time D1 All American in college. And that KO showed he was developing some nice hands. That is far from affirmation that he is a triple threat.
