Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

Jon Jones asked the UFC for a HW fight once he beats Rashad and Dan Henderson but the UFC said no: "I actually asked Dana and Lorenzo, could I take a fight for the fans at the end of 2012. I figured beating Henderson and Rashad, there would be a period where we'd figure out who I'm going to fight next, and during that period, at the end of 2012, I asked to fight a heavyweight -- a Top 10 heavyweight."

It upsets me that the UFC would say no. Every one is clamoring for Jones to go up to Heavy

No one at 205lbs can touch him. Also freakin Brandon Vera was able to do it, Dan Henderson basically just fought Fedor at heavy, Randy Couture did it several times……doesn’t make sense to not afford the pound for pound best in the world, possibly best fighter of all time the same opportunity.

Randy and Vera were heavyweights who dropped. Jumping up a weight class is different than cutting down. And I think it’s still premature to dub him the best in the world, let alone history.

Randy Couture fought Chuck Liddell for the LHW belt and lost and his next fight was at heavy against Heavyweight Champ Tim Sylvia

And while you’re right about Brandon Vera, he was an overblow LHW.
And Dan Henderson just did it as well…I’m just saying there’s precedent so it shouldn’t be a big deal.
Also Jones has come off the best year of any fighter in MMA history period.

The difference is Randy and Hendo weren’t holding UFC belts at the time they moved up.

Randy came out of retirement to fight Sylvia and Hendo was in Strikeforce.

How about Anderson moving up and taking 2 fights at LHW while being the MW champ?

by HuskerHammer on Feb 1, 2012 9:52 AM EST up reply actions

We'll see when we get there.

For now, I think that Jones is doing very well at 205, and unless he can’t safely make the weight, then I think that’s where he should stay. I doubt LHW will be bereft of challengers.

This is the key

Dude’s still young and his body will keep filling out. He’ll be at HW eventually. All depends on how long he wants to fight.

I think that's yet to be seen.

Jones has ample strength/ speed and seems very sturdy at 205. Even though he has chicken legs, it doesn’t seem like he will develop much more muscularly, unless he specifically trains to do so.

I think one more year is good.

As long as he can make weight, I’d like to see him really establish his status with three more dominant wins, Rashad, maybe a rematch with Shogun or Machida, Hendo, or if a young guy like Gustaffsson makes a push. I love Jon’s attitude, but I think it’s a good idea to wait until there’s nothing else for him to do.

I would hope they'd be open to it

But maybe they want to sort of focus on making him the best LHW of all time before having him jump up in weight.

I mean, if he beats Hendo and Rashad…that’s 4 defenses already, he’d be one off of Tito’s record.

Something tells me that with the Rogerio-Gustafsson winner and other key matchups…that they will produce a new challenger by the end of the year.

Rampage-Bader, Machida on the rebound, Davis on the rebound, Rogerio-Gustafsson, Thiago Silva returning etc etc I think a new challenger will be produced.

Jumping around in weight classes has mixed results. I think the UFC is trying to avoid messing up a good thing.

Yep.

I think they have been soured on the idea of champions swapping weight classes by their experiences with Anderson Silva and GSP. Anderson moved up to fight Irvin and Forrest and looked awesome, but never followed through to compete for the belt. They got nothing out of him destroying Forrest as a viable contender other than a cool highlight. I’m sure they were disappointed that they never got to book him in a champion versus champion fight at LHW. Then there was a ton of talk about GSP versus Anderson, and GSP seemed interested for a while, but then threw cold water on the idea once things got serious.

I don’t think they want Bones moving up and wrecking one of the few viable contenders they have at HW unless he is serious about challenging for the HW title.

jones would rape both Rogerio and Gustafsson

by phantom5691 on Jan 31, 2012 8:40 PM EST reply actions

I think so too

But then again, I was sure he would rape Rampage and he did, I rooted for Lyoto because I was a fan of his first…but knew in all likelyhood that he would thoroughly defeat him.

I feel like he is going to rape Rashad as well.

I don’t think how easily he would defeat his next few challengers should determine if he should jump up or not.

I don't mind having Jon...

destroy, let’s say destroy:), Rashad, Hendo, T.Silva, and I’d even like to see a rematch with Shogun or Machida down the line a bit. I like rematches. There’s no rush here, the HW division is as strong as it’s ever been right now, we can let it sort itself out a bit.
