Face it Folks: Mike Bisping Shut A LOT of People Up Saturday Night
If you had gone by the betting lines leading into this fight – some of whom had Sonnen as a -400 favorite – then you’d assume this was as foregone a conclusion as rain, taxes, and the Kardashian divorce.
And in the end, I suppose the oddsmakers got it right. Chael Sonnen got his hand raised after three rounds, like most folks thought he would.
But that doesn’t tell the whole story, which simply put is this: fans, media, pundits, critics, and whoever owe Michael Bisping an apology – and I’m counting myself in this lot, too.
Turns out you can wrestle pretty damn well, after all.
Everyone remembers the argument about wrestling leading into Bisping vs. hendo at UFC 100. Everyone remembers scoffing at the notion that the Brit could compete at wrestling with the American wrestler. Everyone remembers laughing when Bisping threw out that half-hearted shot attempt and was easily stuffed by Hendo.
It would have been a more memorable moment had Hendo not followed it up with the Falcon Punch heard ‘round the world.
Still, that image forms the basis for the “Bisping can’t wrestle” mindset me thinks, even though he held his own with guys like Rashad Evans and Matt Hamill.
And what’s more, Chael Sonnen isn’t just another good wrestler. He’s the best functional wrestler at middleweight. He’s a guy who faced Yushin Okami, Dan Miller, Nate Marquardt, Brian Stann and oh yeah, Anderson Silva, and he wrestled the living crap out of all of them.
He didn’t wrestle the anything out of Mike Bisping last night.
Oh sure, he took him down enough to win a decision, and landed enough ground n’ pound to avoid the “lay and pray” label.
But he didn’t succeed on every shot. And when he did, Bisping was always quickly back to his feet. Even in the third round, after getting the best wrestling effort Sonnen could put together, Bisping ended the round on top of Chael. In the clinch, it was even more evenly matched – so much so that it was tough to tell who was the Greco-Roman national champion and who was the cocky guy from England.
If Anderson Silva had done as well wrestling-wise against Chael as Bisping did, I doubt that fight ends with a Hail Mary triangle choke.
So allow me, Mr. Bisping, to on behalf of the MMA blogosphere (of which I, obviously, am spokesperson) apologize for so totally writing you off in this fight, and ignoring the great strides you’ve clearly made in your wrestling. You may not have won this fight but I think you won more than a few detractors over to your side last night, and proved that you really belong at the elite level in MMA.
If nothing else, you’ve got some fans screaming that you were the one who got “robbed” in a decision instead of your opponent for once, so enjoy that while it lasts.

Considering Bisping made over 400k on his fight against Mayhem, I would hope he hired some decent wrestling coaches.
Being born in England doesn’t relegate you to being a terrible wrestler for your entire existence regardless of effort, it just brings you up in a country that is not as wrestling-centric at an earlier age as the USA is and not as BJJ centric as Brazil is, then the counter point could be argued that those two countries are not as boxing centric as England and yet there are very few English strikers that people associate with the best of the best in MMA, for this I blame James McSweeney.
Bisping has the ability to adapt to MMA and hire the best of the best, if his wrestling training wasn’t up to par, you’d have to question his entire MMA training and trainers.
I personally did not write him off, but I figured Chael would win a decision regardless of what Bisping did short of a miraculous knock out or a less than miraculous triangle choke.
There are just matchups that suck, and Chael will beat Bisping 90 out of 100 times I’d imagine, if Bisping wants to get a W in his next fight, I hope he doesnt fight Alan Belcher.
It's just a world, it's just a life.
I am curious
Why did you pick Alan Belcher? I am actually not being sarcastic; if I were to pick the worst matchup and probable next fight I would have said Munoz would be the worst possible for him. I am new to BE and total fandom (which I define as watching or reading about every single fight), and Belcher has been someone I haven’t seen fight a lot.
But looking at their records, Belcher hasn’t beaten anyone good. Could you elaborate?
I thought Lay N Pray was a stupid insult until I watched Tyrone Woodly fight.
I think he means that Belcher has more power in his punches and kicks than Bisping. Belcher moves well and has great counters. In fact many of us feel he could out counter the Count unless your counting on the Count using his TD’s to work over Belcher from top. In that case Belcher could be down from/for the ©count.

Belcher is a huge 185er and he is probably the most underrated 185’er was off for a long time due to surgery, always fights competitively, has no real weakness but can get outworked and sometimes he seems to gas out a bit.
I think if the UFC thought to give Bisping a good match up, Belcher would be a very bad choice, as he was a traditional kickboxer and probably cuts 10+ more pounds than Bisping.
Also Belcher has good jiu jitsu skills and I think he would be competitive on the ground as well, he is a good challenge for anyone at 185.
It's just a world, it's just a life.
thanks for the polite reply,
But would Belcher be a likely opponent for Bisping at this point, given his long layoff? The points you make are all good, but given his one fight in the past year and two fights in the past two years, a shot at a top contender seems highly unlikely.
I would guess that Munoz, Okami, or Belfort would be his likely next matchups, although Belfort is likely out of that picture due to his upcoming obligations with TUF Brazil. Okami is fighting Boetsch in February. My thinking is, do you have him fight a can as his next fight or top level fighter in his class? If it’s top level in his class then Munoz looks to be it. Is my thinking wrong?

And
I should have worded that better, as you clearly have Belcher not being a can but a potential up and comer who’s just been sidelined by injury. But my point is there still, I think.

How about this
Munoz would be terrible, but (and I am not yet confident in my understanding of time between fights required or the optimal time between fights) what about the winner of Sakara V Stann? I think both might be exciting fights, as they are both strikers.
The problem as I see it is that the Stann v Sakara fight is 75 days away, 2.5 months.
I just don’t see who else he fights that’s relevant right now or in the near future.

I'm imagining,

90 out of 100?
I don’t think so – that fight was pretty much a tossup – Chael edged a very thin decision, I think Bisping would win as many as he lost or close to it if they fought several times.
