Teaching a no-gi class
I'm a high school history teacher and I'm taking a break from the norm to teach a no-gi introductory class at a high school as part of a three day winterim class schedule. This is my "course description" if you will. I will be giving this as a handout to my class tomorrow. Comments are much appreciated.

Winterim 2012
“Submission Grappling 101”
What exactly did I sign up for this Winterim, anyway?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most effective and intriguing forms of combat sports on the planet. It was originally developed as a self-defense system for smaller people dealing with larger, stronger assailants. Whether you want to improve your self-defense, get a good workout, or participate in some healthy competition, this class is for you. Students will receive a brief introductory class into the sport of Submission Grappling/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu requires a gi top and bottom; for this class, a similar style of the sport will be taught without the gi – or by the name it is normally referred to – No Gi.
What do I bring to class each day?
Each day for winterim you can show up in school spirit dress just like everyone else taking winterim classes. Once homeroom ends, you will change your clothes and head to the Old Gym. For our class you will need the following every day:
<!--[if !supportLists]-->- <!--[endif]-->athletic or board shorts (with a drawstring) - mouth guard (recommended)
<!--[if !supportLists]-->- <!--[endif]-->t-shirt or compression shirt - presentable hygiene (showered,
<!--[if !supportLists]-->- <!--[endif]-->athletic cup (strongly recommended) clipped toe and finger nails, etc)
How is this going to work?
Each day we will do some light conditioning and stretching before we begin. Then there will be time for instruction, situational drills, and live sparring. There may be homework assigned that will require internet access. If there is an issue with internet access, please speak to the teacher.
This is a class where I get to punch people in the face, right?
Wrong. Submission Grappling deals solely with positional advancements, submission holds, and self-defense on the ground. There is no striking whatsoever in this class. Failure to obey the preceding statement will result in an immediate failing grade for your winterim class.
If there are any issues regarding student behavior or aggression, the instructor may address these issues using his discretion (ex. sitting out of drills, being sent to the administrator’s office, failing the class). Understand this: Submission Grappling is not “fight club”; it can be more accurately described as “human chess.”
Please sign below if you understand the behavioral guidelines for this class:

- You must watch “UFC on FOX 2” this Saturday night, January 28th, airing 8pm to 10pm on FOX. While watching, you must fill out the following form. If you already have plans for Saturday night, you can either tape/DVR the show or attempt to find the programming online later on. Regardless, the show must be watched before the first day of winterim.
- UFC on FOX 2 will feature at least three Mixed Martial Arts fights featuring several well-rounded fighters. Obviously MMA includes striking, but I want you to pay particular attention to any grappling or submissions on the ground. We may try to break down and learn some of the techniques used in these fights if they are relevant to submission grappling.

a small private school near Albany, New York. there's gonna be around 12 kids in the class. can't wait
You're in Albany? Awesome.
I’m in the area. Let me know if you have any questions or problems.
I should be able to help out a bit.

Very interesting. I can’t see anything necessarily wrong with the syllabus at all.
If I could make a suggestion, because these students are completely introductory based and you’re the only experienced grappler present then I would suggest not having anyone do any sort of live roll whatsoever.
I think a good idea would be to teach a position (i.e. guard, side control etc) and teach a set of different types of techniques for that position per night (i.e. on guard night teach the basics of what guard is, top and bottom and have students work a pass from top, and a sweep/submission from bottom).
That would be a good way to introduce a number of newer people to the various positions and the options within each position. Don’t over complicate but because you’re trying to draw interest you should teach things are are interesting (but not overly complicated).
A general idea would be:
Guard Day – 1 pass from top, 1 sweep and 1 submission from bottom. Also the basics on how to hold guard, what guard is, why the guy on top can’t submit the guy on bottom in guard, posture maintenance (from top) and posture control (from bottom).
Half Guard Day – 1 pass and 1 submission from top. 1 sweep and 1 submission from bottom (maybe talk about taking the back as well). Don’t go into fancy half guards. Talk about the underhook and why it’s important for top and bottom.
Side Control day – 1 submission from top, 1 reversal and shrimping to reattain guard from bottom (don’t teach bottom side control subs… they’re not going to be understanding an underspin d’arce just yet). Talk about hip pressure and body control, really work on shrimping to re-establish guard via bridging and shrimping.
Mount Day – 1 submission from top and how to maintain mount when the opponent is trying to escape (i.e. where to place your weight and your hands/feet). 1 reversal (the Upa) from bottom and 1 shrimping to guard or half guard (via bridge/frame/shrimp). Talk about arm position and how to stay safe on bottom by not giving up your arms or neck.
Back Day – 1 submission from control and how to maintain control. 1 escape from having your back taken, talk about what hook is important in what body position, how to defend against the choke, how to move your body so you can rotate back into guard or escape the position.
Take Downs – Walk through very simple pummeling drills and a simple hug and lean take down from over and under control, and the lean take down from double unders.
So on and so forth, you get the idea.
The idea has crossed my mind multiple times to go to my former college and talk to the athletics director to see if I could teach a class on BJJ/Self defense 1 day every other weekend or something so I definitely support what you’re doing with your students; you’re probably the coolest teacher ever.
Hope they enjoy it and sign up to a school!

The mat is my church, the ground is my heaven, Jiu-Jitsu is my religion. And once you hit the ground you're in my world. My world is like the ocean, I’m like a shark and most people don't even know how to swim - Draculino
If I live in a castle and you want to kill me, storming the gates is probably not the best idea. You'd do a lot better hitting me in the head with a brick when I come out for the mail. -Ryan Hall

I’d also say start getting a bunch of really awesome competition highlights together from youtube that are about the legends in the competition circuit; maybe have them check it out as homework etc etc.
A list of guys to show off would include:
Terere
Rodolfo Vieira
Roger Gracie
Ronaldo Souza
Andre Galvao
Wellington Dias
Rafael and Gui Mendes
Ryan Hall
Bruno Malfacine
Felipe Costa
Nino Schembri
etc etc etc, just find guys who are known to be exciting and technical. Maybe have the students sort of look at their different styles and talk about them etc etc.

I'm just busting your balls, Patrick
I like your postings and we clearly share a love of BJJ. Just providing some “shout outs” to Saulo and D.
I now have a signature statement. Behold!
Yeah I know haha, but now I’m angry I forgot Saulo!

Thats a fucking sick class.
I would pay to go. Damn, private schools.
God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore's vengeance, and you must see it; I set myself entirely in your hands. I know you must see it now.
This is awesome
Should be fun for you to teach and them to learn. I like that you’re including an analytical component too, that’s even better.

Wow, that is awesome.
I wish we had combat sports at my University. I am too lazy to organize a club, and just go to a gym in town.
"God loves violence... Why else would there be so much of it? It's in us. It's what we are. We wage war, we burn sacrifices, and pillage and plunder and tear at the flesh of our brothers. And why? Because God gave us violence to wage in his honor... There's no moral order at all. There's just this: can my violence conquer yours?"

Pretty cool stuff
But watch universe is going to fuck you over and every fight end in a knockout very quickly.
Or Anonymous hacks the broadcast
