Bisping vs Sonnen: It's going to be close!
When I wrote a piece previewing Mike Bisping's most recent fight against Jason Miller and posted it on Bloodyelbow.com, I got quite a lot of criticism for suggesting the Brit would win pretty easily against a severely under matched opponent. In large parts of the MMA media and online community, it sometimes seems like people's dislike for "The Count" confuses their judgement of his abilities. Well, this weekend at UFC on FOX 2, Bisping has a chance to prove his detractors wrong by defeating a legitimate elite middleweight, before a massive mainstream audience and earn the chance to fight for the title. For Bisping fans like myself, this fight has the feel of being the main event this Saturday.

Recent History
- Bisping is on a 4 fight win streak with his most recent loss coming at the hands of Wanderlei Silva.
- He has finished his last 2 fights by TKO.
- Sonnen lost to Anderson Silva by triangle at UFC 117 while appearing to be ahead on points, having successfully grounded (but not necessarily pounded) the champ.
- Sonnen was suspended for having elevated testosterone levels after the fight but returned with a dominant submission victory over Brian Stann.
Styles
Micheal Bisping gets some stick for just jabbing and moving but there is much more to his approach than that. Those who criticise his style overlook the fact that he does have the right combination of aggression, power and work rate to finish fights (more than 80% of his wins are by TKO or submission) as well as the cardio and endurance to go the distance when necessary. Bisping fights with a very mobile and dynamic Muay Thai. He employs great movement to avoid big punches and avoid being taken down (cue GIFs of Dan Henderson knocking him out at UFC 100). Once people get a hold of him, Bisping has shown that he is tricky to get to the mat and harder to keep there.
One fight that I feel will gives us a clue into Bispings chances against Sonnen was his bout with Rashad Evans, way back at UFC 78, Rashad had some success with taking Bisping down but really struggled to keep the Englishman down or make it pay off. Evans ended up winning a split decision of course and it was some time ago, but there was proof there that Bisping is not the kind of strike-centric fighter who provides fodder for strong wrestlers. In fact, it make have been the fact that Rashad was able to hang with Bisping to some extent on the feet, that helped him sneak the decision.
With Chael Sonnen you know what you will get. He has great wrestling, with an ability to shoot from distance or wrestle Bisping down from the clinch. He is uncommonly gifted at smothering guys so that they cannot work (it took Anderson Silva four and a half rounds). He does not, however, possess great power and, untill the Stann fight, had not demonstrated the ability to submit guys at the top level.
Head to Head
It is absolutely astonishing that Mike Bisping started at 4-1 to win. Sonnen himself has been pretty vocal about the fact that the Count wins fights. Chael Sonnen's record is pretty vocal about the fact that he loses fights. No, this fight represents a step up in class for Bisping since his last few fights but he does belong in this level of fight.
I already said that this fight has the feel of the main event about it. One of the biggest areas of anticipation is around whether Chael can take Bisping down, or more likely, how frequently? After that, how long can he keep the Brit there and can he do any damage? Realistically, a guy like Chael Sonnen will take you down. I feel like this fight will go similarly to Bisping's fight with Rashad Evans, except for the fact that Sonnen does not possess the standup game to present Bisping with problems. "The undisputed, undefeated champ" will be successful in taking Bisping down, but I don't think he will be able to hold him there, much less finish him there. That leaves the bits of the fight in between. I am pretty sure Bisping will comfortably out strike Sonnen and that his movement will keep the fight on the feet long enough for that to matter. The balance in this fight will be between the take downs of Sonnen and the amount of aggression Bisping is able to show on his feet. Oh, with the joker of a possible submission from Bisping from the bottom.
Prediction
I am really unsure, I really think this will be a close decision. I suppose I think Bisping will be a little busier, so I'll go for Bisping by split decision.
Why watch it?
It's one of the strangest, love/hate personalities in the sport against the best fighter Britain has to offer (or the most hated fighter in the UFC, depending on how you look at it).

If Bisping wins, I'll apologize for all of the crap I said about him
fighting lower level opponents, fighting hand-picked guys that were so low on the totem pole that they shouldn’t have been fighting him.
I’ll apologize for saying that he always loses to top competition. I’ll say sorry for him being the first guy in years to lose to Wanderlei, for him fighting Dan Miller off of two losses, Akiyama off of a loss, Jorge Rivera after a long time out, Jason Miller after a long time out.
If he beats Chael Sonnen, I’ll leave Bloody Elbow(not sure for how long) and admit that he was every bit as good as people made him out to be.
If not….then I’m going to keep humming my same tune.

no need to apologize
Even if Bisping miracles a win. Because all your points remain valid.
I now have a signature statement. Behold!
That's kind of the point.

How do you think Sonnen wil beat him?
I am curious about the idea that Sonnen is sure to beat Bisping. The only way I can see of winning for either fighter is by decision realistically, unless Bisping somehow submits him from the bottom. But I’m really not sure Sonnen will be able to keep Bisping down and have his way with him enough for a decision.

I just believe Sonnen is a perfect style matchup for Bisping
Not a lot of people have the wrestling chops to take Bisping down and keep him down, but I believe Sonnen does.
Not a lot of people have the overall aggression needed to not get sucked into Bisping’s striking game, but I believe Sonnen does.
He is on guys like white on rice from bell to bell…Plenty of guys simply can’t handle that type of pressure period…then throw in that he is a very talented wrestler, and that he is very active from top position, that he seemingly will look for a sub if it presents itself, that Bisping himself hasn’t subbed anyone since 2005, and that Sonnen has probably been working quite hard at sub defense….and I just cannot fathom how Bisping wins this fight.
I mean, a lot of times I pick a guy, and I can see a clear path to victory for both guys…but not here. I mean, of course, if Bisping stuffs his shot and outstrikes him, or subs him…he wins…but I just see the odds of him doing that as microscopic.

Bisping can't fight going backwards
That is why old man Wandy was able to beat him even though Bisping was the more technical striker. He couldn’t deal with his aggression. He couldn’t deal with Henderson’s aggression either.
He’s fighting Chael Sonnen, a guy who was so aggressive he was able to land on Andy Silva and take him down without getting KTFO like most of Silva’s other opponents.
Bisping folds when people put pressure on him, and Chael’s greatest strength (and greatest weakness) is his aggression and pressure.

Has Michael Bisping always been given the easy guy, and will get an easy title shot?
His career path doesn’t seem like it’s some kind of outrageous injustice that he’s getting a step up in competition. Wins the ultimate fighter, immediately gets some mixed opposition who aren’t bad at all in BJJ black belt eric schafer whos on a run, very experienced elvis sinosec and standout wretsler matt hamill, beats em all. Loses to a rashad evans whos LHW champ in a year, in a close fight. Builds back up again against some mid-level opposition and a hot chris leben (just killed 2 guys in the cage) before getting an all-time legend and getting stupidly beaten. Wins against experienced but not awful guy in a convincing manner, again fights an all-time great, admittedly a faded one which is his biggest criticism but a guy he doesn’t match well against, strings off 3 wins against 3 more varied opponents who are by no means bad, apart from miller were doing pretty well until they fought him-complains about having to face rivera, was winning the fight and then due to an illegal blow which has somehow been called completely malicious has his entire fight called into question. Then was supposed to be matched up with sonnen for a TUF series, steps in against someone who can hype a fight but noone was sure if he’d bring it. Dominates him pretty much, never in any real danger the nly time he got taken down. Now pulled up from fighting a guy just above him in the rankings who he stood a decent chance of beating, to face the no.2 in the division, a step up but he;d earned it by beating the lower level guys-it’s not like there’s a rule you have to fight all the top 10 b4 you get a no.1 contender fight. If he wins, he’s the new no.1 contender. if he loses, has to beat another top 10 or 2 fighter to be in for another chance.
Point is that he may not have beaten everyone around but he’s fought the guys who are there at a good level good variation of styles, has fought some world class guys and lost but he’s earned another shot at one of them. Arguably he;s been given an extra tune up fight here or there, but that’s what all guys who they think have some potential, who don’t miss weight, make some controversial comment, and yes, bring in some fans. And you know what, I don’t mind if he gets too pissed off when people insult him, least he’s a little more of an honest guy, and most fighters seem to at least respect him-dan henderson aside.

Absolutely
The fact that most fighters seem to respect Bisping and his record is one reason not to shit on it too much. This is a step up but he’s earned that and beating Sonnen will surely merit a title shot. Easier said than done though…

Not necessarily pounded?
Didn’t Sonnen hit Silva more times than he’d been hit in his entire UFC career up to that point or something obscene like that?
And Fitch set the record for most punches in a round against BJ...
But they weren’t exactly violent punches either.
At one point, Sonnen was slapboxing Spider’s ears.
An annoying Fitch fan.

And if "slapboxing" Anderson Silva isn't one of the most impressive achievements in combat sports
I don’t know what is, other than tickling Paul Harris into submission.
Also, the idea of ‘non-violent’ punches is as hilarious as it is absurd.
by WheelieMonkey on Jan 27, 2012 3:16 AM EST up reply actions
Yep, good point
He did stay on top and land a lot on Anderson, but my point was the same as Zakkree’s, he didn’t really do any damage. I feel like Sonnen will be unable to do much damage on the ground and that Bisping might well do a good job of getting up quickly.
http://jim-ma.blogspot.com/
That's a lie
And I’ll never understood why it’s repeated so easily. Anderson Silva does not walk around looking like this every day:
Not once in his three (legit) losses has he ever looked like that, and no point in his MMA career has he looked a fifth as bad.

yeah, i’m not sure what that photo is supposed to prove. anderson broke a sweat while submitting chael?
Do you seriously see no difference between that and every other picture of Anderson?

i don’t see any cuts, i don’t see any black eyes, i don’t see any hematomas or contusions. i looks like he just stepped out of the shower, actually.
Just curious:

As a fault against another? Do you make sure to doubt Daley’s power because he didn’t knock Nick Diaz out? Jim Miller’s jiu-jitsu sucks because he couldn’t tap Benson?
Silva’s got the most immaculate face in the game, Sonnen punched the crap out of it. Spin that however you will.

yeah, but i’m not the one who posted the photo claiming it as evidence that sonnen actually did some damage to anderson. sonnen hit silva with a bunch of weak punches from his guard, but that’s not super impressive in my book.
it is going to be close. i’m assuming you were referring to whether Bisping will loss consciousness or if he taps.

Bisping has lost to every elite opponent he has ever faced
Sonnen is going to beat him and continue the streak.
Sonnen's record against elite opposition isn't great, either

True
But his wins over Marquardt and Okami are two very impressive wins over relatively elite opponents.
Lets not forget that people expected him to get destroyed by Dan Miller, only for him to derail Miller’s hype train.

I don't remember people thinking Dan Miller would destroy him.
I remember thinking that Miller might sub Chael, and he came close on a few guillotines.

i’m thinking back to the Marquardt fight, and Sonnen took the most punishment in that one—he was cut up pretty bad, as I remember—but managed to lay on Nate long enough to eke out a decision. Bisping’s TDD and ability to get up from his back are both a lot better than Nate’s. good enough to beat sonnen? maybe not, but it’s far from obvious.
He dominated Marquardt
Outside of an elbow that sliced Sonnen up, Sonnen dominated the grappling. Easy 30-26 for Sonnen.
Don’t act like just because Sonnen bleeds a lot that he was ever in danger during that fight.
