Would the knuckles up style of bare knuckle boxing be better suited to defending the takedown?

This piece

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7476455/brian-phillips-boxing-career-freed-american-slave-tom-molineaux

so I started reading this piece, posted here Hereby BECW washout and all around villain Subdevil, and when it mentioned that wreslting throws we're permitted in early boxing, it made me think...Would the knuckles up style of bare knuckle boxing be better suited to defending the takedowns?

Think about it...fists held palms up are already in position for under hooks, and in most of those old images, the guys tend to have a fairly wide stance too, giving them a lower center of gravity and a better base to defend wrestling.

Of course, this might not be the best way to avoid leg kicks, but when you are fighting a guy who is primarily a wrestler, it makes sense.

Think about how Njokuani looked against Castillo...aside from the hand position, he had a pretty wide base himself. Far wider than normal MT stance.

p

Is that why that posture evolved?

Great read, it's an interesting question.

IIRC there was a great fanpost about early boxing, Nick Diaz style and early boxing use in MMA, can’t remember who posted, might have been a HKL cross post.

Those boxers didn’t have any more homogeneous stances and postures than modern boxers, but yes, if they had to defend against throws, they’d be better at defending throws…

There was a very heavy grappling component

Including throws and possibly submissions (it’s tough to tell from the fight descriptions), all the way up until the Marquis of Queensbury rules were adopted universally in the 1880s. I recommend nottheface’s awesome piece (linked above), and if anybody’s interested in more of the same there’s a great book on the topic: “The Manly Art: Bare-Knuckle Prizefighting in America”, by Elliot Gorn.

Well, the hand positioning would be a little weird for MMA

The way that bare knuckle boxers outstretched their arms would make it pretty easy to hit an arm drag,

"God loves violence... Why else would there be so much of it? It's in us. It's what we are. We wage war, we burn sacrifices, and pillage and plunder and tear at the flesh of our brothers. And why? Because God gave us violence to wage in his honor... There's no moral order at all. There's just this: can my violence conquer yours?"
