Second training session at Marcelo Garcia's gym: Recap

Ok well sorry I didnt post this yesterday but here is a very simple and basic recap of an absolutely AWESOME training session. The teacher yesterday was Henrique Rezende, who has been training under Marcelo since he was 14. He is a really nice guy and holy crap he is so damn good at what he does. I got lucky and was paired up with a purple belt who was actually assisting Henrique in the drills so I could not have had a better training partner. He also taught me some cool little tricks that were not part of the lesson and was surprised how quickly I picked up on the moves, which felt good to hear. The first thing we learned was a take down and after we learned two reversals from the half guard. I don't have the time to go into detail about it now but one of the reversals we ended up taking the back leading to a rear naked choke and the other was a sweep into the other guys half guard. I really am hooked and I was so eager to learn and still am! I cannot wait until tomorrows training session because it will be awesome. Keep all tips and advice coming because I want a need it all plus I appreciate it as well. Thanks!

Does Marcelo’s gym have air conditioning and a sprung floor? Does it have some sort of curriculum?

You and your curriculums. How many gyms have you bounced around at now?

I have not been doing MA for over a year. Need to get a car and try seaching again, hard to find good MA schools, its amazing how bad the teaching is and how little some of the people seem to care.

Sounds wicked

I’m currently rehabbing a shoulder injury but I’ll be back 100% by June, and I want to start BJJ…I’ve never done it. I’m 24 and former college football CB so I have good athleticism, but also tore my labrum really badly and am recovering from surgery right now.

Should I start at Marcelo’s gym or somewhere else to learn the basics? I know there’s a 10th Planet gym in Astoria, and also Renzo’s academy which I’d rate on a similar level as Marcelo’s. Thanks

Go where you think you would like it

Don’t worry, every one starts off a white belt.

Try the Alliance gym. It’s between NoHo and Gramercy park on 3rd Ave. Small, but fierce is how I’d characterize it.

Plus my friend Peanut is a brown belt there.

im healed from it but still not full strength and its over a year ago but i havent been doing much to cause it to strengthen it i guess. just dont fuck around when it comes to rehab its not worth it. i do definitely recommend marcelo’s gym if money is not an issue for you (it is for me which i have to workout somehow)

You obviously typed that from Rubber Guard

Henrique is the shiz

Marcelo’s got his number pretty well when they roll but against anyone else, henrique runs a train on them. His movement is out of control. He is the perfect example of how the marcelo game works for anyone. Youtube is tournament fights. He never stops attacking.

thats exactly how everyone there describes the style

aggressive attack attack attack. and its not surprising as he has been learning everything he knows from marcelo but ya he is totally awesome.
